As a resident in BKK for 4 years I would say you are safer here than almost any capital city in the west. Remember, the media only reports what is happening in a small area of BKK and even that is pretty mild. Believe me, there is really no problem at all and unlikely to be in the future. The Thais don't do coups or civil unrest very well, they are far too gentle for that.
