Dual Nationality, Application For Non-res Visa

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am 50 +, healthy and can show 800.000 +

Application for retirement visa in Japan where I reside for the last 30 years should be no problems.

I would like to apply with my UK passport (they have a consulate in Chiang Mai, nearer than Bangkok for me planned residence) although my permanant resident visa for Japan is in my belgian one.

Any problems ?

Thanks for your help

Lopburi3,

Thank you for your reply. I understand that the obvious easy solution for the visa application is to do it with the belgian passport where the permanant reisdence status is.

My question was to know if they would accept to consider my application with my UK passport (as they would if I applied in the UK) knowing that I can show I am a resident of the place where I apply for the visa (Japan)

Sorry if it sounds like a troll but to me it would make my life much easier when I will have to apply for extentions/ renewals, certificates to be able to do all in Chiang Mai rather than having to go all the way to Bangkok

Another sub related question would be to know the possibility t have the retirement visa (supposing it was in the belgian passprt) changed to to UK passport once in Thailand. Would that be a possibility ?

Looking forward to your reply to my genuine enquiry

Regards

They won't change visa's between different passports. You can try, but the Thai Embassy is not noted for being helpful. All these dealings with that British Consulate regarding extensions etc are not likely. You'll be dealing with Thai Immigration. Good luck.

I don't quite see the problem here, or what certificates he is talking about.

With either passport he can go to Penang and apply for the a Non O, based on the wish to retire in Thailand.

If he lives in Chiang Mai then he should apply for his 1 year extension there after about 2 months.

All he needs to show is 800K in the bank and good health.

Where he lived before is irrelevant. It only matters if he applies in Japan, where he has PR, as the Thai embassy will probably want to see a police report.

Hi Astral,

Do you mean that in Penang they will not need the police report ?

In Tokyo they would need it but that is no real problems.

I read in some threads that at some points I would need cerified papers from my Embassy regarding my wish to retire in Thailand or certified translation of documents for other purposes and would have preferred to deal with all thet in Chiang Mai rather than Bangkok (both for Embassy(UK) and immigration(Thai)

The 800k should be in a Thai bank in Thailand ? Will they accept a Bangkok Bank bank book original/copy or do they need a balance certificate from the bank ?

It also seems that you can only apply for Non-O visa in your own country or in a country where you are PR. Is it not true for Penang also ?

Thanks for your help

They want to see your passbook and a letter from your bank ( not more than 7 days old ) evidencing your account. You won't be asked for a police clearance for an O visa in Thailand. Just get a Tourist Visa and convert it at Immigration in Thailand.

Hi Dr Pat Pong,

Is it easily accepted to apply for a change of visa category Tourist to Non Im for retirement in Thailand (as long as one meets the criteria of age, health and the 800k) ?

Do not understand why no-one else has picked up on this but extensions are done at your nearest immigration office not the consulate. UK or Belgium passport you use the same immigration office in CM.

Hi,

I am aware that the dealings regarding Thai visa, extentions, local driving licenses, etc will be with the Thai offices concerned near to where I will be living (Chiang Mai will only ! be 230km away)

I, however think that having a UK consulate in the same city would make things easier for any dealings related to the UK side like passport, cerificates if any needed from the home country. One example would be that the UK passport is valid for 10 years as opposed to the belgian one of 5 years...

Thanks to all for your help and input

Regards

You are well placed in Chiang Mai.

There is a Thai immigration office that can deal with all your extensions of Thai visas. They may send the paperwork to Bangkok, but that is their worry not yours.

With the British passport, it can easily be renewed via the consulate in Chiang Mai, though again the actual processing will be in Bangkok.

For the retirement visa, it can be in either passport. When the passport expires and you get a new one, the Thai immigration will transfer the visa over to the new passport.

As Dr Pat has said, there is no requirement for a police report if you request the retirement visa in Thailand.

It is only required if you ask for the one year O-A visa at a Thai embassy overseas, Tokyo, in your case.

Good luck with your retirement.
