Clashes began after dawn as cops used tear gas to force a path through 5,000 people blocking parliament in Bangkok to disrupt the opening session.

The People's Alliance for Democracy claims that the Thai government is the illegitimate puppet of ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

Cops, who also fired stun grenades, were joined by military back-up. Army chief Anupong Paochinda denied coup rumours.
