Anyone coming to the Remembrance Service and Thanks to the local Ubonites?

If you are and you want to lay a wreath, please let us know in advance, either through this forum topic or via the Ubon Hash House Harriers website. ubonhash

Any 'beer drinkers with a running problem' may want to turn up for the next run on 01 Nov. Again check out the website and give us a heads up for beer purchasing requirements.

For those who are/or are not familiar with Ubon, the Ubon Hash runs provides a good opportunity to explore Ubon, meet some of the locals, and have a good time. :D

The Hash runs are not about winning, but a fun social event for "beer drinkers with a running problem". However non alcoholic drinkers are widely accepted as well. :D

Most partisipants are jogging/walking, and the unknown tracks have so far consisted of a short 3 - 4 km route for the average runner :o , and a long 8 - 9 km route for the ones that are out to impress......................(their gf/wt/etc.). :D

Hope to see some of you guys there! :D

Below are some pics from the first Ubon Hash Run.

Thanks for that Bergan. Excellent!

Going back to the Remembrance service. The Provincial Governor will be the guest of honour. The service will now be on Armistice day itself (Tuesday 11th November) starting at 1045. Details are on the ubonhash website.

This years 'event' will prove to be on a whole new level.

You can get Poppies prior to the day from the N-Joy and the Wrong Way.

Thanks Boyscout; according to the latest organizers' meeting. the Ubon Remembrance this year will cover 3 events, all at Tung Sri Muang Park, central Ubon, 1045.

09-11-08 - Remembrance for Thai Resistance fighters.

10-11-08 - 'Thank You Ubon', remembering all those local Thais who saved so many Allied prisoners.

11-11-08 - Remembrance of war dead. Altho poppies, etc. give a British Commonwealth impression, it's for all.

I'm just curious, what is this event for exactly? Could someone explain the history to me? I'm guessing Vietnam-War era? Thanks :o

More information on the link below:

Thanks for the link, I had no idea about this history. The idea of the Japanese controlling Thailand or Ubon for that matter, using farang POW for slave labor is quite surreal to think about. You know, I frankly have to wonder why it seems to predestined that Asian countries commit so many war crimes. There aren't actually any old farangs living in Isaan from that era are there? Where exactly in Ubon was this prisnor camp?

The idea about having a ‘small’ service to say ‘thank you’ on behalf of the former POWs to the people of Ubon for their compassion toward Allied POWs, originated in 2006. As there is a Monument of Merit here in the park built by ex-POWs in 1947 a local Farang researched it. There is actually very little ‘solid’ information.

When the originators decided that they would say ‘thank you’ on Armistice Day, I asked if we could have a small Remembrance Service at the same time.

With the involvement of the Provincial Governor this year, we should have more resources to fill in the blanks and have a more detailed and historically correct version of what exactly went on back in 1945.

Hope this helps everyone understand where all this came from.
