Driving Scooter In Bangkok Needs A Permit?

Featured Replies

Do I need to have a license to drive a Moped Scooter 50 or 80 cc ?

and 120 cc? If yes do I need to get a International License or I my current car driving license do?

Thanks in advance

You can't register a 50cc scooter so it is not legal on the road. I'm not sure about 80cc, the smallest registered bikes I've seen were 100cc.

You need a license for any registered motorbike.

Your current car-only license is not valid, you must have a motorbike license. If your current license is in English it may work but don't count on it.

Notice this is mainly an issue about insurance. The worst that will happen if you get stopped by a cop is that you'll have to pay him 300 baht for not having a valid license - but insurance companies have the right to decline coverage if the driver doesn't have a valid license - and they will do everything they can to save paying up so you'd be well advised to obtain a Thai license. It's easy to get anyway, search this forum.

Don't even think about not having valid insurance unless you plan to have a lot of cash on your person anytime driving!

If you live out in the sticks then you may get away with driving an un-registered scooter without a licence,

but don't bank on it.

The insurance part can be very real if you hit anything, or it hits you!!
