Happy ending, I got my dough credited, but I find out now that I was just lucky. Not everyone (not even close to everyone) gets their moolah back.

Phuket residents watch out for the SCB ATM machine on the ground floor of Central Festival. Seems to me that the OS ought to be re-installed. It might have been repaired but then again, perhaps not. A better bet is to go directly upstairs to the SCB banking office area and do your transaction there. If something does go wrong, a rep is sitting no more than 10 ft. from you. Note the time and holler.

The m/c crashed mid-withdrawal on Saturday @ 11:00 AM. I called the BKK office & filed a report; and got a written report from the SCB branch upstairs.

The BKK office stated flat out that they would conduct an investigation and IF verified that the m/c did indeed not cough up the dough, my A/C would recieve the credit on the 3rd. biz. day (wednesday, i.e. today).

An SCB rep called today to inform me that the credit was done this afternoon and asked if I had any questions .... now re-read the first line of this post.

No, I don't want to say "This is Thailand" -- I would like to hear from you more experienced fellows in LOS about such matters.

A few days ago I read (on this board) a couple of well-written posts on the dangers of Thai Visa/MasterCard credit (NOT ATM) cards offering absolutely no fraud protection. I had already previously applied for mine and they are due to arrive (?) by the end of this month. Ouch!!

LOS pros, please rise to the occasion. Muchas Gracias!

On my way out of LoS last time I used my brand new Bangkok Bank visa card at an ATM at the airport. I got through the transaction no problems, was waiting for the cash and the machine made this terrible sound.

It spat my card back out at me and told me that there had been a mechanical error.

My wife had just left to go back home so I was alone with one visa card, no worries I thought as I could get my cash in Dubai during my transit.

Upon arrival in Dubai I went to the machine in the wall and found out that the ATM at the BKK airport had erased my magnetic strip, I looked at the card again and realised it was for electronic use only.

I spoke to the wife who contacted the bank to report the 10k baht that was missing, and then my employers who were good enough to give me a sub out of next months wages.

I hate ATMs and visa cards and so on, but where I work you just cannot carry money around with you, one lady from my work was set up for a mugging by our local employment agency, others have been beaten by the police and robbed, some have even had their girlfriends jailed until a bribe can be paid to secure their release. :o

Happen to me a couple of times, but with Visa card from my home country.

4 years ago with Thai farmer`s Bank, Phang-nga Rd. (8K) Three months and many visits to the bank before the money was back on my account.

3 years ago with Bank of Asia. (30k) Got the money back after a short week.

The key here is 'SCB'. They have been trying for a while to upgrade their core banking system and _everything_ was down for a whole weekend before they realized that it was time to roll back in the middle of the day the following Monday. I think last weekend was another attempt, not sure whether the upgrade went well this time or if they had to roll back again...

4 years on and the problems are still there.

I had a screw up when I was withdrawing 20,000 on the 14th of January this year 2009. I am still waiting for the money despite promises that it was credited back this week? The ATM is in the foyer of SCB Park Branch the HEAD OFFICE!
