Hello, I am a 29 yr old US citizen. I ran accross "Thailand’s Nationality Act B.E. 2508 as amended by Acts B.E. 2535 No. 2 and 3 (1992)" Which stated that andbody with a thai parent regardless of where they were born aquire thai nationality.

My father is Thai and mother American. My US birth certificate plainly states my father is Thai and mother American.I have their marraige certificate.(married in USA) and

a copy of both of their ID's.

I visit my father regularly and am married to a thai wife.(she lives here in US with a green card.) But we want to move back to Thailand and it would be nice if I could get dual citizenship before we move.

Can anybody point me in the right direction to get this process started?

any ideas on how long it may take given that I can provide all documents?

Are there applications out somewhere or do I have to be in Thailand to apply?

Any help is much appreciated!!!

A Thai consulate in the states should be able to help and take care of getting you a passport so that you can stay here without a visa.

Use the pull down menu at the top of this page from the Thai embassy in DC and you can get a list of the consulates.

http://www.thaiembdc.org/AboutEmb/EmbDirect.aspx

I think you may have all the documents you need.

Good Luck

Will an honorary consulate work? There is one in Oklahoma where I am living now, according to the website. thanks again

Has anybody been through this process before? Any ideas on how long it may take?

You could contact them but I think you will need to do it through one of the official consulates.

I can't help with your other questions. Search around the DC website a little and you might find more info. Chicago and LA also have websites with info. I have noticed though that a lot of the info for passports and such is in Thai.

You can start by getting your Thai birth certificate, if there is no statute of limitations. It's the only free Government document I've ever seen.

You need to send them your Original Birth Certificate, naming both your parents, in Canada that was the large paper one, not the little card. You have to send your Dad's pasport too, I think? but they will let you know.

The King wants to keep all his children, is what the Vancouver Consul said.

I believe, but not sure, that once you have that Thai BC, you can enter Thailand and get your Thai identity card, then Passport.

whoops found this - subsititute American for Belgian

To Apply for a Thai Birth Certificate

1. A child born to a Thai parent outside Thailand is entitled to acquire Thai nationality, the parents can apply for a birth certificate for their child at the Royal Thai Embassy in the country of birth.

2. The following documents are required in order to obtain a Thai birth certificate :

2 copies of the Belgian birth certificate and its translation into Thai; both documents must be legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belgium We did NOT need translated copies, but they DID want the original Canadian BC

  • 2 copies of the marriage certificate of the parents << we are common law, not married, in Canada and the Thai Consul issued our daughter a BC
  • 2 copies of the passport of the father and the passport of the mother (either two Thai passports or one Belgian and one Thai passport)
  • 2 copies of the identity cards of the father and of the mother
  • 1 photo of the child

Thanks for the comments. I appreciate it.

I do have those documents ready. So I just mail them to the nearest Thai consulate and state what I am trying to do? Or is there an application to attach as well?

Has anybody been through this process or know somebody that has? Tring to get a timeframe of how long this process will take.

I found some info on the LA consulate website in english there is a lot more info in Thai. This info is for passport application but it says you need a Thai birth certificate. Have a look at this info and maybe have your wife read some of the info in Thai it may give you a better idea of what is needed.

Update:

I called the embassy in DC and they directed me to the Chicago consulate since I live in Oklahoma. I spoke to a gentleman in Chicago and explained what I was trying to do. He said there is no age limit on aquiring citizenship. However since it is my father that is Thai, he must be the one to apply for my Thai birth certificate. He told me to get my parents marriage certificate, mothers US passport or ID, my US birth certificate and send it to my father to submit along with his thai ID to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs(SRI Ayuthaya Street in Bangkok) to get my Thai birth certificate. And once that is aquired than I am a Thai citizen and can get a thai passport or ID the next time I goto Thailand.

So I am sending my documents to my father for him to submit. Guess i'll just have to wait and see what happens....

thanks to all that replied and pointed me in the right direction.

Sorry to say, but sounds like nonsense. Your father has to apply for the BC and it has to be done in BKK and there you can get a passport, etc. Several members have reported difficulty obtaining a passport in Thailand in the case they live abroad, because they are nowhere registered.

if you look for example at the Thai embassy's website in the UK: http://www.thaiembassyuk.org.uk/

you will see a totaly different story, with much less hassle. You might want to try another Thai consulate: http://www.thaiembassy.org/

Glad to of been of some help.

You might tell your father to check and see if he can do it at the Amphoe (district office) where he lives. That might save him a trip to Bangkok.

If you can't get it all done before your next trip you can get your passport here. There are now offices all over the country whre you can get them and it only takes a couple of days.

Just going to a consulate near you with your birth certificate and you fathers ID would get you a non immigrant O visa that would give you a 90 day permit to stay. Of course you could do the same with your marriage certificate and wifes ID or passport photo page.

Yup, it shouldnt be a biggie. He has a home in Ding Daeng, BKK, so not too far from the Bangkok office.

Now im curious of how long it will take!! As soon as I get the Thai birth certificate, I am putting in my 2 week notice and moving to Thailand. Will be a life changing event! Going to be getting out of I.T. career (in Oklahoma) and getting into property development in BKK!!!

I don't think it will take long to get the birth certificate. It could even be the same day. If I remember correctly the website said 2 or 3 weeks for the passport.

So you might be looking at a month and a half at least figuring in the time it will take to get the paper work to here and back.
