Can We Help Thai Fishermen Earn a Living Again?

Featured Replies

The reason I ask is, many Thai and Indonesian fishermen's boats were smashed beyond repair.

These boats resembled Mexican "Pangas" a boat originally designed by Yamaha or similar co in Japan for 3rd world countries.

If 'plugs' could be bought and shipped from Mexico it could start another small industry for the Southern area.

There is a link to the American, luxury version of a Panga fishing boat, below.

I figured if Mexicans can afford a (bare bones) Panga, maybe Thais and Indos could with grants from the Tsunami funds..

Any ideas?

Pangas..... forget the outboards!

They can be adapted to carry an old car donk, as in Thailand. :o

I have a few leads in Mexico if anyone is interested.

cheers,

udon

There is a few at the back of Boat Lagoon and a few up at Yacht Haven. Sorry that is all I am aware of. They are Thai builders BTW.

Thanks T.

Maybe I should have written a more alarming title as there seems little interest in helping the fishermen :o

Tell me which title you like udon ... i'll change it

Thanks Darkie, see my PM. :o

Market realities and healthy tourism will revitalize the industry faster than anything IMHO. If there is not a good supply of fish - and tourism is strong - the price will go up - making it worthwhile to finance or build a boat. If it is not - it won't.

Though - I'd have to agree - I'd be willing to help someone rebuild. Teach a man to fish and all that . . . though they already know how to fish. Maybe: Teach a man to build a fishing boat and . . .

True.

Ted, do you have any experience with fibreglass or moulds?

Sunbelt knows or knew, a farang in Phuket who was/is a boatbuilder.

I know nothing. :o

If a boatbuilder depended on my skills, he would soon be out of business. Sorry!

It is said that some Nordic Countries discuss the possibilities for sending fishing boats to South Asia after the Tidal wave smashed fishing boats in every country affected.

Thanks Felt, but I think they need to be beachable in the majority of cases.

Shallow draft etc, just like the Panga and up to 32' long.

Maybe someone knows more than me...... :o
