Plan start work on a sports stadium project in Samui soon, getting quotes from various builders for the main clubhouse structure which is on 2 floors and measures 20 x 12. One builder has suggested doing the framework out of steel as this would be quicker and cheaper..

What are the advantages / disadvantages of using steel or concrete for the frame ?

It's rather like the main con from O1 tower asking the girl at the noodle stall outside if they should have lifts or staircases

Keywords: Samui, Concrete and Steel.

Concrete structure built to design specification will last more then 60 years with no need for maintenance.

The same cannot be said for steel structure subjected to the salty air of an island.

The only way to get quality control in Thailand is to use either steel or precast. Cast-in-place concrete for a two-deck stadium here is asking for problems.

From a contractor's perspective, steel is easier for site-work than concrete; it just requires proper coordination. Precast will require larger cranes, or shorter spans.

But as others have said, this isn't the right place to ask... and I'm not the right person to answer...

If there is no ready-mixed concrete available on the island, design the support structure (columns and beams) from 1st floor to the 2nd using site mixed concrete of 180 KSC. Make sure concrete cover over the steel reinforcement is at least 35mm to withstand carbonation. Floor of the 2nd floor can be pre-tensioned pre-cast planks with shear keys and concrete topping. Columns from 2nd floor to roof structure can be in steel.
