Wiener Schnitzel In Thailand

Featured Replies

I was reading up on Wiener Schnitzel around the world and realized some things about it I never knew before. For example the milanesa that is so massively popular in Argentina is the same thing as Wiener Schnitzel and that in Israel the chicken or turkey Wiener Schnitzel is often served in a pita bread. Also the Japanese tonkatsu, also Wiener Schnitzel! Learning all this was a Schnitzel revelation so now I want to go eat some good Wiener Schnitzel here in Thailand.

Here is the question. I have learned that traditionally Wiener Schnitzel in Germany and Austria is made of veal but that pork is also common, but when pork is used it is called Schnitzel Wiener Art (Germany) or Wiener Schnitzel vom Schwein (Austria).

Am I correct in assuming when Wiener Schnitzel on a German menu in Thailand it is usually going to be pork?

Most German restaurants in Thailand would serve what in the states would be called pork cutlet. I have eaten real veal in Italian restaurants and veal sausage in several continental restaurants in Thailand.

Yes, AFAIK it's generally pork in Thailand - I assume because Thai pork is excellent whereas Thai beef is not very good.

Reminds me of a true life story some years back in California where an Italian restaurant had a menu item of veal parmigiana but substituted pork with the excuse that the available veal was too dry and the pork tasted better (coincidentally that it was much cheaper). The problem was they didn't tell the customers. Anyway once a disgruntled worker in the kitchen spilled the beans, the lawsuits from some local Muslims were stunning.

Thai Veal Wiener Schnitzel translates as "flipflops".

Regards.

Yeah, assume it's pork if it doesn't specify. I've ordered a "hamburger" that didn't specify the meat, only to find myself eating a porkburger. Somebody needs to alert the Europeans that a "hamburger" is made with beef, and if otherwise you must say so or risk many irate Americans!
