New American Passport

Any Americans out there tried to get a new passport recently? How long is it taking with the new security measures? How much is the fee? I need to get a new one before my next visa/work permit cycle, and I'd also like to go on vacation in late March/early April. Do I have enough time to get the new one between now and then? What happens in the meantime if I need one for identification/proof of visa status, etc.?

Check the web for cost but it takes 2 weeks and you have your present passport during that time so there is no id issue.

Edit: You do this at the American Citizen Services Unit here in Bangkok across from the new Embassy building or in Chiang Mai - you do not do it by mail.

You also need a 'special' photograph for the new passport. The American Cosulate will direct you to the closest photo shop...if I recall it is just on the opposite side of Wireless.

:o I live on Koh Phangan. So, I get to go up to Bangkok, apply and then two weeks later go again? Ugh. I saw on their website they are going to be making consular visits to Phuket (this month) , Pattaya and Udon in Feb, Samui in March and Khon Khaen in May. If they are going to make these trips they will email one month in advance. Anyone in Pattaya gotten this email yet (gotta be registered with the embassy btw)? If they come to Samui it would save me much running back and forth (I do get island bound after awhile :D ).

alternatively, you could stay in BKK for the 2 week wait.... :D sounds like you dread the place as much as I do, AND are much further away.

Seriously however, a friend of mine had his application done last year on one of these consular visits, but did have to make the trip to BKK to pick it up.... but at least that's one trip and not two. :D

Quelle Horreur!!!! :D:o The thought of two weeks in Bangkok makes my nerves jittery already (and my husband's wallet groaning in advance :D ). Guess I'll hope for the consular visit to Samui in March, I emailed them awhile back but they weren't sure if they would be coming or not. Too bad they don't have an emoticon for fingers crossed!

      Deputy Prime Minister Visits Mae Ai and Mae Sai to Monitor Recovery Efforts

The purpose of the visit was to oversee recovery efforts following recent flooding and to deliver a message of support from the Prime Minister to those affected. During the visit, the delegation participated in a community clean-up initiative in Mae Ai, focusing on homes damaged by the floods. Anutin emphasised the government’s commitment to providing assistance, stating that the Ministry of Interior had mobilised resources, including personnel and equipment, to aid in the recovery process. “We have been closely monitoring the situation, and I want to assure you that the government will not abandon its citizens. The situation is improving, and we are moving into a critical phase of rebuilding,” he said. Anutin further outlined that the government had already approved compensation for affected households, including a waiver on electricity bills for September and a 30% discount for October in flood-hit areas. Additional funds for repairing homes are also in the pipeline. “The dedication of local leaders has been invaluable in ensuring that aid reaches those in need. I bring the Prime Minister's concern and love for all of you. The government will always be here to support you,” he added. Minister Theerathat shared the recent experiences visiting various affected areas and reiterated the government's commitment to restoring normalcy. She mentioned the approved budget of over 3 billion baht for relief efforts, which is being processed to ensure timely distribution to those in need. “Do not hesitate to voice your concerns; it is our duty to help you recover and restore your lives to what they were before this disaster,” the minister said.       Body of Man Found with Throat Slit in Apartment, Najomtien

      Picture from responders. The body of a man was found with his throat slit in an apartment in Chonburi province. The scene appeared to have been staged to resemble a suicide, with the body laid on the bed as though the victim had taken his own life. A knife was found at the scene. At 09:30 on September 21, Lt. Col. Natchapon Saengsi, deputy investigative inspector of Najomtien Police Station in Sattahip District, Chonburi, responded to a report of a murder at a public housing project, building 61, in Najomtien. The investigation was led by Police Colonel Watchanchai Saengrith, Superintendent of Najomtien Police Station, with forensic experts from Chonburi's Forensic Science Centre and rescue workers from Sawang Rojanathammasathan Foundation. Upon arriving at the scene, police found a large pool of blood in the living room, along with a sharp kitchen knife in the blood. There were signs that the body had been dragged into the bedroom. The deceased, identified as 24-year-old Mr. Anucha, was found lying on his side on the bed, resembling a sleeping position, but with a deep cut across his throat. In the kitchen, traces of blood were discovered, though they had been partially washed away. Authorities suspect the perpetrator may have fled through the back of the room. There were no signs of struggle in the apartment, raising further suspicions. Neighbours reported noticing a strong smell of blood around 22:00 the previous night (September 20), but did not act until the next morning, when the odour intensified. They alerted a security guard, who checked the apartment through a window and saw the blood, prompting a call to the police. Mr. Wichai, 60, the father of the victim, arrived at the scene in deep grief. He stated that his son was quiet and kept to himself, having only one close friend who he described as a tall, fair-skinned man serving in the military. The father noted that this friend had visited his son's apartment but was unable to provide further details. Police, together with forensic experts, collected all evidence from the apartment. Initial investigations suggest the case was probably not suicide, as it was just staged to appear as such. Officers are currently reviewing CCTV footage from nearby areas and questioning the victim’s friends and acquaintances. The body has been sent to the Forensic Institute at the Police General Hospital in Bangkok for a detailed autopsy. Investigators are withholding further details until they receive the autopsy results and gather more evidence to proceed with legal action. -- 2024-09-22
