Salween River Dam Projects

Featured Replies

Has anyone here hread a publick opinion on the dam projects that Thailand, Burma and China are involved in? I knwo some international grousps aren't happy for once completed it will be like the Three Gorges Dam and will flood historical sites and people will have to move, but I am interested to see what the Thailand government and cizitens might be thinking about it. I am trying to determine if Thailand is benefitting from these dams as well and have a postive view or is tis more for China and they have given a reason for the Thailand government to go along with it. Here is a site explains a little of what is going on.

Don't know - but I'll check if they're hiring any expat engineers.

The article talks about generating hydropower without dams. This requires very specific natural conditions, as in the Uri Project in Pakistan.

I am currently trying to find locations in Bangladesh, but without success. Neither can BD build dams. Thay are only able to use fossil fuels or nuclear sources because of the poor geography.

One has to consider the cost of construction; the cost of foel; the potential life of the generating plant. Usually hydro is cheaper over a 25 year life cycle, followed by coal, with gas and oil more expensive.

Nuclear has it's own problems of disposal of waste - unless you use the Chonobyl remedy/

Let me know what you find out. There are a whole bunch of different projects all up and donw the river that all the governments, Burma, China and Thailand are involved in. I am having trouble finding anything that the Thai government might have to say on their part in it. If you come across anything, let me know.

Cheers,
