Awwwwww... jaffles, love 'em.

I remember a few years ago when I was a kid, my dad bought home this jaffle iron, no electric ones then.

It was usually heated on the stove element, we loved making them on open fires whilst camping out in the back yard.

One of my favourite fillings at the time was, Bread, both slices spread with Marmite and heap of apple slices + sugar, and cooked up.

Exquisite taste, dunno if Vegemite was on sale in NZ then, my dad had a grocery shop too.

Thems were da days.

Phil - the current binge chez JxP is probably coming to an end soon, I'll lend your our toasted sandwich maker once we're done . . . it's only going to gather dust for a few months before the next urge comes along!

Toasted sandwich maker = jaffle iron, yes? Jaffle apparently derived from jaw full and so much more succinct!

Must run, have to go to the market for apples . . . the marmite and sugar is ready . . . not sure if I've the stomach for this experiment . . .

PS:

suegha - I knew the egg version was going to be messy but I hadn't realised quite how much mess one egg can make, a worthy trial but a fried egg between two slices of fresh white bread still remains champion in the egg sandwich category, closely followed by egg mayonnaise and onion on fresh granary bread.

I'm glad you explained about the lack of availability of Vegemite, Pete. I was about to accuse you of high treason...

We also had one of those old jaffle irons when I was a whipper snapper - tasty snacks prepared in the open fire in the kitchen!

^^ So it didn't work? :o

Mm, well, kinda, sorta . . . actually, no!

Maybe I'm too fussy about my eggs but I like part of the experience to be trying, and failing, to keep the yolk from dripping out of the sandwich. Our sandwich maker turns two pieces of bread with filling into two sealed, toasted, triangles of calories hence the egg being broken and over cooked.

Right now I'm trying to graduate our two year old from buttered bread with a touch of Marmite to full blown toasted baked beans and Marmite toasted sandwiches . . . I may be back with updates!

Far too complicated. A couple of slices of buttered, day-fresh bread (untoasted) onto which you deposit your soft-boiled eggs. Plenty of pepper and a hint of salt. Unbeatable.

Yes, yes, yes - that version does beat the fried egg sandwich . . . freshly ground black pepper and a pinch of salt, lovely. The only advantage of a fried egg sandwich is that it can be created as a side snack during the demolition of an English breakfast. I'll say no more on that topic, the Chiang Mai forum being the appropriate place for breakfast discussions.

Not for me, eggs in any form make me projectile vomit. :o

At college my friend was eating eggs. I asked if he had ever been put off eating his food. He said no. I asked if i could try. He laughed and said go on. I told him he was eating a Hen's period. He stopped eating. :o

Love my eggs - like the majority, I'd say. Vomiting from food (note I said food) has only ever occurred to me twice - both times wen I was a whipper snapper. The first time was self-inflicted (too much condensed milk - haven't touched it since that day when I was about 7 years old). The second time, about the same age, was when rels were visiting and the matriarchal-type aunt insisted that I eat the bread and butter pudding dessert. I think my effort probably put everyone else at the table off bread and butter pudding for life.

As we're on the subject of sarnies and the pic does show toasted bread this fits in nicely.

Bacon sandwich really does cure a hangover

A bacon sandwich really does cure a hangover - by boosting the level of amines which clear the head, scientists have found.

Researchers claim food also speeds up the metabolism helping the body get rid of the booze more quickly.

Elin Roberts, of Newcastle University's Centre for Life said: "Food doesn't soak up the alcohol but it does increase your metabolism helping you deal with the after-effects of over indulgence. So food will often help you feel better.

"Bread is high in carbohydrates and bacon is full of protein, which breaks down into amino acids. Your body needs these amino acids, so eating them will make you feel good."

Ms Roberts told The Mirror: "Bingeing on alcohol depletes neurotransmitters too, but bacon contains a high level of aminos which tops these up, giving you a clearer head."

Researchers also found a complex chemical interaction in the cooking of bacon produces the winning combination of taste and smell which is almost irresistible.

Amazing, it takes highly paid researchers hours of study to come up with what we have all known for years.

Not the best bacon butty though. This offering from Bob's Big Bite, Stourbridge holds that accolade.

I'm starving.

Yummy, a bacon butty - try topping it with a lightly fried egg. Oh, and some traditional HP sauce...
