Male chimpanzees will share the proceeds of their hunting with females in exchange for sex, researchers claim.

Experts observed the meat-based prostitution in the Tai Forest reserve in Ivory Coast noting that chimps which shared food had sex twice as much.

They say the "meat for sex" deals are part of a long term arrangement and males share food even when females are not fertile, so they get to mate with them when they are.

Previously when researching the "meat for sex hypothesis" boffins expected sharing meat to lead directly to copulation rather than it being part of a longer term deal.

I guess that says a quite a bit about the dating habits of some academic researchers.

Dr Cristina Gomes from the Max Planck Institute in Germany said: "Our results strongly suggest that wild chimpanzees exchange meat for sex, doing so on a long-term basis.

"Males who shared meat with females doubled their mating success, whereas females, who had difficulty obtaining meat on their own, increased their caloric intake, without suffering the energetic costs and potential risk of injury related to hunting.

"Previous studies might not have found a relationship between mating success and meat sharing because they focused on short-term exchanges; or perhaps because in those groups access to females was driven by male coercion so females rarely chose their mating partners."

Well, I spend my hunting time going to strange countries and bringing back money which I share with my wife in disproportionate amounts.
