I just thought I'd start a topic and share what I do.

And I will update it every time i activate my camera.

I was wondering where to put it and what section it could be under, but I think its pretty general.

Please help me shift to the appropriate subforum or forum is I'm in the wrong one :o

So for now I'll start with... weddings

traditionally some couples do bridals or pre-wedding shoots. Its usually posed photos in traditional / wedding clothing.

Recently some couples want to do the shoot but without the wardrobe complication and romantic feel in those images.

Extremely cool, I have questions, but I have to think about how to ask. The images are quite small. Can I have a look at a full resolution piece of one of those pictures. Lets say the face of the guy looking back in his car, or a portion of the people bouncing in the park. Maybe a weird request, but I can't quite see what you have done by just the low rez pictures.

whoa the full res images are about 10 - 12MB

but i don't think i have the high res images from that shoot because i did it some time back.

oh wait, the biggest size for the "guy in car" image i have now is 900x570

will that do? click here to download it

i do have images from more recent shoots, doing roughly the same thing.

I don't know...Not my taste but quite interesting :o

What did you do to get those colours in Photoshop? They sort of look like HDR?

There is something in your techinque that is close to an effect I am trying to achieve.

In your manipulation of the guy in the car looking back, do you have a workflow or procedure you follow to get the kind of synthetic textures you have achieved, or do you just keep cranking till you get what you want. I would love to know the process you followed to get it to that state.

By the way, the Wedding stuff you showed is totally top drawer. I wasted several years of my life doing very average wedding photos. The stuff people really wanted is the kind of thing you show here. The problem was getting people to make it a priority because they think you can just get it all done in the 45 minutes between the ceremony and the meal. Of course in Asia wedding pictures are not all done on the big day so that must be a huge advantage.

Ignore the narrow minded hacks.

i use camera raw in photoshop

colours, u can adjust individually to suit your taste... all in camera raw

i saturate certain colours, remove some yellows (for asian skin)... etc etc

oh, its lots of sharpening (brings out details)

dodging and burning

dodge the dark areas to "flatten" everything

after that, burn the shaded areas.

dodging and burning takes up a lot of time because you have to do it selectively.

nice work, is that lucis you are using?

nope

lucis and topaz effects are pretty obvious, you'll get very close to the "dave hill" look and texture

here's how it looks like using those kind of filters

116-300x200.jpg

66-300x200.jpg

55-300x200.jpg

88-300x200.jpg

125-300x200.jpg

107-300x200.jpg

my cousin used lucis and if you had analysed these kind of photos enough, you could tell that they used the filter.

but if people used the filter without knowing how to "clean up the image" (it generates lots of things you don't want) then it would not be suitable for print.

but ultimately its the lighting, everyone jumps to the conclusion that every photo can be used. :o

Totally agree - very interesting stuff. It's all about style and individualism and you've certainly got that.

this is actually from a wedding series for a couple who likes to play cards with their friends

but i only picked 2 out of the 8 portrait shots

2701343010_aa62872729.jpg

this client just bought a new toy, the stuffed sheep. he wanted a photoshoot done so we thought of something like a CSI theme (without a lot of props but with photoshop cloning)

he also liked to take macro shots with his tiny Ricoh, so we went to the gardens to get one shot too.

oh please, its not that interesting at all, if you translate most of the portraits, especially the wedding ones, to their original image, the pictures are crappy and boring its the fascination in computer manipulation that interests you. i do not see this as photography, its computer art, like using a synthesizer to create classical music!

This forum is about Photography and THE ARTS.........

Not my cup of tea either, but everyone to their own.

Thanks for sharing.

Yumi you are right I am interested in the manipulation, and I am sorry to say, image capture is just the beginning these days in photography. Leading edge photographers see the finished product at capture, imagining all the possibilities right through the image process. Today it's better to get your head around some of the modern tools. It is not cheating, it is just a bigger world now.

This particular photographer obviously has a the ability to bring out the latent fun side of his clients and he has the skill to carry the image all the way. People want a unique image, they want a signature piece, not a grin and grab, Kodak portrait techniques, hide it in the cupboard one.

This guy will make a fistful of cash doing it just this way.

I for one found it interesting and I don't find them boring - but hey, the stage is yours, show us what you've got. Give us a clue, we're all anxious to learn.

As 'The Vulcan' mentioned "yum-i-design" let see what you have to SHOW OFF, as all you have shown are thumbnail size photos :o and a crop or two of others photos when playing with "your computer Farts"

Yours truly,

Kan Win :D
