128 road checkpoints set up in Bangkok

BANGKOK: -- Police and soldiers set up 40 security checkpoints in Bangkok and 88 other alcohol checkpoints were set up by police stations, the metropolitan police chief said early Saturday.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Pol Lt Gen Worapong Chiewpreecha said the road checkpoints would help the government keep security in the capital following the lift of the state of emergency.

Worapong was speaking to reporters after inspecting a road checkpoint in front the old Thai Rak Thai Party office on Phetchaburi Road in Huay Kwang district at 2 am.

Correct there is one at my place just before my entrance.

A few weeks ago I was stopped at a checkpoint and had to do alcohol test, very quick just 2 seconds blowing in some device and they can see if you have been drinking alcohol or not (I did not).

Very good!

One can only wonder why they didn't do something similar during Songkran. Would seem that saving little Mark's face is deemed more important than saving lives.

Spot on Catmac.

Some of the driving/motorbike riding over Songkran was appalling and dam_n right dangerous, and the boys in brown were no where to be seen.

THougt they were to be seen in the bars drinking then driving home.

Or to the next bar.

I can assure you the checkpoint near my place was placed well before Songkran and during Songkran they were indeed stopping vehicles and inspecting.

perhaps police in the capital had other concerns.

i spent my first songkran in bangkok ever this year, and have never enjoyed driving more. barely a car on the road. even less taxis. it was actually pretty spooky

i think the protests may of had something to do with this :o

yes, that was my point, to suggest that the police were busy with the protests and could not be bothered with roadblocks.

however it is my understanding that traffic in Bangkok is essentially non existent over Songkran anyway, and the anti drinking and driving checkpoints would be far more useful on the highways than in town.
