Limes, Why Are They Suddenly So Expensive?

I am used to buying limes for about 5 baht each from supermarkets. Now the same limes more like 10 baht each. Why?

I had the same problem here is Samui.

Apparently this is seasonal as limes are very scarce at this time of the year . We pay anything between 8 to 10 baht and there is only one stall in the local market that is selling them. Usually all fruit stalls stock them.

There was apiece on TAN today about vegetable (which apparently includes limes ) prices - the summer weather was badly affected harvests and many veg prices are rising.

The hot weather has also meant that pigs have been losing weight and pork prices are also rising. Stall vendors of cooked pork/meals are cutting down on content. It is suggested that pork prices are expected to drop back to normal in May - this may just be typical Thai buroeaucratic optimism. It was suggested that people switch to chicken which has not risen.

Didn't say if veg prices will also return to normal.

Its simple. Summer is a killer for all citrus (including lime) and delicate leaves (like corriandor).

I guess i tried not to be smart here n i never mentioned about pattaya baht buses.

I am 33 years old, so i guess i m much younger than my people here, but i wonder why you people dont know about this thing. My grandmom taught me all these things when i was a child and mind you i m not from a village, i m from one of the top 10 cities in the world.

I don't recall limes ever being this expensive here in the years I have been here. Seems more severe than a usual seasonal variation.

Supply and demand, simple as that

Told the GF to tell the vendor to put them where the sun don't shine. Were more people to do that the price would come down over night.

always has been seasonal change in price for lime for as long as i can remember

my grandmother would complain about the price increase each year

but it always came back down.

maybe not completely...but doesnt stay in the high price for entire year.

Price of limes has risen from 60 Baht a Kilo to 125 Baht a kilo for me and its killing me. Limes are now my third biggest expense in the bar.

Wow, I used to pay 1 baht each at the 6am morning village market, 2 baht in fact in april (bad month)

Last week price was 5B /look, took 40 and asked for discount, got them for 160B, 4 a piece.

I'm paying about Bt100 for a pack of perhaps 30 or so but the price today was Bt135 so they are moving up.

Same every year. Cheap as chips sometimes and then for a couple of months, the price sky rockets. And the buggers are getting smaller

Now if you want real lemons, you're going to have to flog the bike mate

I've checked, the normal price was about 600bht every 3 days, now its a 1000bht, drinking San Miguel light uses them up and the bar always uses fresh limes for the juice for cocktails etc, not the stuff out of the bottles.

Never understood limes or lemons in beer, not even in Corona. They sure as hel_l don't put limes or lemons in San Mig in Spain !

Totally agree with the real stuff though, sod that stuff in a bottle.

Just another thing they don't see Dave, imagine if you told someone you spent £2000 a year on lemons / limes, they would think you were taking the piss ! but it is only an average Bt285 over 350 trading days a year ! (at Bt50 to £1)

Well the price of limes explains why margarita's are suddenly all tequilla!

Seriously though, pass on the limes and buy some sweet golden mango. We are enjoying a nice dessert at this very moment as my better half bought five yesterday for a total of only 20 baht up here in Chiang Mai.

just spoke to the wife she pays 3 baht here in Pattaya.

Got me JingThing, we have two lime trees in our yard(front/back) no problem if you were near me my two little darling product enough limes for us and many of the neighbors If space permit why not plant a tree for yourself, after about a year or so we had limes for Som Tum, and my Cow Pot etc.

Try eating that bottle after you've poured the juice into your som tam.

While citrus grows all year, there are better seasons for it. Our prices range between 3 for a dollar to 10 for a dollar depending what time of year. right now they're 5 for a buck.
