yeah....nice....but that's as far as it goes with Clapton. Never really understood the hype around him. And you don't play the Blues with a necktie... :D

B.B. King did it - not only for this cover shot... but sorry its a bow tie :)

Bow Ties are allowed :D

Some bands from the 60s are still surviving, be it just their airplay given such as the Beatles, or even with live appearance as the Stones still did not long time ago - and rumours are there that they will tour again.

Bands from the 70s...well...getting thinner, but there is still Queen and Van Halen and some others around.

80...phewww...who was in the 80s....the New Wave stuff is not much talked about anymore even though Gary Numan for instance did some interesting stuff. But no oine talks about it anymore.

90s. Now I really have to think...but the only thing that comes to mind is Madonna...or was she 80s?

00s....no idea, really!

80s - The Cure, The Go-betweens, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Clash, The Talking Heads, The Smiths, R.E.M., 10.000 Maniacs, Depeche Mode, Iron Maiden, The Pixies, De La Soul, Sonic Youth, Guns n' Roses ...

90s - The Stone Roses, Jane's Addiction, Massive Attack, Dinosaur Jr, Air, The Prodigy, Suede, Popsicle, Soundgarden, Moby, Lauryn Hill, etc.

...etc... just give new stuff a chance, and you'll find there's much to like.

great thread...I gotta say that the 'underground FM radio' movement in the late 60s went a long way to populaising music that would never see the light of day from the likes of industry people. Just tune in and you got the Mothers and other small stuff like zydeco and etc...it got me goin' and thinking about the infuence of africa on US popular music; then I started thinkin' about the use of non-indigenous instruments on Latin music and etc, etc...

I don't know how many times I saw the Mothers in concert...I temember Zappa tying back his greasy mop with a sneer and then producing a wall of sound that mesmerised...it was organic, you grooved right with it later to leave exhausted from the emotional overload...

yahsss....yassss....

FM radio just wasn't as much fun after it went mainstream. :)

I must admit that most bands you mention (especially from the 90's) I never heard of. Will make a research here! :)

Sorry - will try again later..

Here you go Patsycat...

Not too hard to embed youtube vids, don't know why more posters don't do. Can't be for space since so many people quote 10 other posts to put in one line instead of bothering to edit...rant over....

For real musical prowess who can forget this:

Why oh why are so many Asians I meet convinced they can sing?? Karaoke is the DEVIL'S tool!

The Stone Roses...... extra credit for mentioning them Meadish, the others had their moment in time but I don't think that they will have the longevity of artists from previous decades.

And there is an interesting point, sitting in the ex-pat bar a few weeks ago with the music in the background, Space Oddity by Bowie started playing, and as per usual, someone said 'what year was this?'...... several guesses were made, including one from myself which was completely wrong, I remembered being very hooked on Bowie in my later school years, roughly the same time as I discovered girls, beer and ganja.... when I ggogled it and found out that it had been a hit when I was 8 years old, I was a little bit gobsmacked.

True that - they won't. But they are all still worth a listen I think.

Bowie is great and his stuff from the 60s and 70s truly timeless, I didn't discover him properly until I was about 18-19 myself.

I think I will have to listen to "Starman" now.

I wonder if the average age of posters on here is driving this thread.

Being a seventies teenager, I used to tell my dad he was outdated with his love of the fifties. I am loath to tell my approaching twenty daughter the songs of her era are dross for fear of the same reaction my dad got.

BTW........Used to like Sublime ( til lead singer killed himself ) and have a soft spot for The Stereophonics.

Bit of a " soul boy" in my youth and turned my back on such wonders as T Rex, which I deeply regret now.

60s and 70s, far too mod for me.

For me 80's was roughly along the lines of:

Early 80's: Adam Ant, Gary Newman, Toyah.

Mid 80s: U2, Simple Minds, Tears for Fears, Specials, Beastie Boys, Eurythmics, Kate Bush (as well as her early stuff too tho)Van Halen, Robert Palmer, Peter Gabriel, black box, Milli Vanilli (lol).

Mid-Late 80's: Guns n' Roses, Motley Crew, Steve Vai, T-Rex, MotorHead, Iron Maiden, Alice Cooper, Aerosmith, Skid Row, Chilli Peppers (of course!), Poison, Prince, Bon Jovi.

Basically i think of early 80s as having a synthesizer sound, bands seemed to play around with that a lot. Mid seemed to have two polar opposites; A lot of zeitgeist type songs (o.O if that makes sense??? Yes, i realise that all songs are a reflection of the zeitgeist really..but i mean songs that wanted to touch upon what was happening in the world at that time), and a lot of pop-tastic feel good songs for those feel-good 80's movies, as well as breakdancing rap style songs. Mid - late seemed to become dominated by rock..i think..well imo...but wadda i know!

--

Some bands of the 90's for me were:

Early 90's: Grunge style stuff: Spin Doctors, Tori Amos, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Nine Inch Nails.

Mid 90's: I recall mid nineties going a bit Blehhhh for me. Seemed to be a lot of pop bands, boy bands, girl bands, warbly love songs and stuff. Wasnt really my bag.,,but i think Placebo was around this time tho...so there was some hope for me.

Late 90's: Nickleback, Beck, Jamiroquai, Foo Fighters, Darkness, Chilli peppers (always!)

-----

..tired of thinking now..so will just throw in a few random bands from 2000's. Tenacious D, Muse, Chilli peppers (again), Nickleback (again), Foo Fighters (again), Sean Paul, Enrique Iglesias (just that one song "Hero"..omg...omg...o.. yeh I can fall for lightweight cheesy songs sometimes too)

But, still love a lot of different generations of music. Listen to classical also.

Tnx patsy! Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet :)
