When I travel I usually don't take group tours, but for some larger countries like China they can be very useful. For example I once took a 2 week bus tour of Turkey and had a grand time, there is no way I could have experienced that much of the country myself in that short time.

Living in Thailand, its good to know there is a good budget priced San Francisco based tour operator that sells land only packages. That way, you will be of course traveling mostly with English speaking Americans. This comes recommended by the San Francisco Chronicle.
