The Tv Theme Quiz Thread.

Featured Replies

Inspired by SBK's TV nostalga thread running here I have been thinking about making a complation quiz like this for some time now. My regular Friday evening out ended a little earlier than normal last night so I used some free time to knock the attached MP3 file together. It took a bit longer than I expected and the resultant three and a half minutes might be too long for some people to listen through but I tried to get a little something that everyone would know. (Assuming general exposure to popular television from the past 50 years.) My wish was to create that feeling; that only if you heard a fraction more you would get it.

Some clips are easy peasy, even those of only a few seconds long. I think some of the longer clips are more difficult as they probably didn't have such wide appeal during their TV airing, beware the elephant trap that sounds like something else. I admit to having a bit of fun that might raise a smile in there. I've used original sources where possible so no cover versions, although most are from TV orignal series there might be a few movie clips as well. :)

Shall we say one point scored for each correct identification (some programmes were known by different names when shown outside their country of origin but we can be flexible with scoring.) bonus points available, if this thread is well liked I can do another one on a similar vein, let me know what you think.

Good luck.

I was thinking of doing a Pub Quiz, in the Pub, I might get round to it.

I just remembered, niggling me for hours;

Duelling Banjos - Deliverance

That was a movie Moss, not a TV prog ...... I don't want to put words into his mouth, but I'm fairly sure that Cubie meant that he had to take some of the music from movies and not the TV series, like the Mission Impossible theme which is not from the original TV show, but taken from the movie scored by half of U2.

Yes, I think you are right now, I knew it was a film, but I read it as he was throwing in some film clips as well, but probably not.

Thank you all for taking the time to have a go even if you haven't been brave enough to post your guesses. I think between Venturalaw and Blinky Bill you are pretty much there except for the elephant trap, which so far everyone has fallen for :-)

Full answers tomorrow or the day after, OK ?

Well the Duelling Banjos tune was made a hit in the Deliverance movie, but part of the tune was used for the TV game show...............Jeopardy!! (#14)

Why you no have The Thunderbirds put inside?

:)

I reckon Taddy did best! ER is the last one!

Results Spoiler....

Well done to everyone that had a go, I'm pleased that there was as many right answers as there was but the elephant trap worked well. The sixth clip was the theme from Beavis And Butthead (Cartoon series from MTV), I did think that many would say it was Shaft as there is a similar guitar twang as the clip fades. I started out with more movie themes but after reviewing my work in progress I thought it would be too difficult, it was certainly too long.

Extra points to those that noticed the differance in The Avengers and The New Avengers, I had hoped that some might think is was a repeat like the Deliverance clip.

Was this worth doing? Fancy another one along similar lines, make it harder?

The complete list of clips with year of broadcast (subject to your correction) below:

The Flintstones - 1960

Hawaii Five-O - 1968

Red Dwarf - 1988

The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe - 1964

The Outer Limits - 1963

Beavis And Butthead - 1993

Mork And Mindy - 1978

Daria - 1997

Happy Days - 1974

Bewitched - 1964

The Micky Mouse Club - 1955

Alfred Hitchcock Presents - 1962

The Benny Hill Show - 1969

Deliverance - 1972

Six Million Dollar Man - 1974

The Addams Family - 1964

Mission Impossible (Tom Cruise movie) - 1996

The Avengers - 1961

Car 54 Where Are You? - 1961

Dr Who (First Season theme) - 1963

Top Cat - 1961

Deliverance (again) - 1972

The New Avengers - 1976

The Jetsons - 1962

Tom And Jerry - 1950s (1940s?)

The Twilight Zone - 1959

ER - 1994

....looking back through the list I'm stuck by the age of some of these programmes, feeling very old this afternoon.

If you have the time, go for it.

I was quite happy getting twenty out of the twenty seven (it would have been 22 if I hadn't assumed it had to be a TV show)

I'll let someone else go first next time ..... or we could reply by PM only next time.

Bleedin' 'ell; missed it. But then, my results were pretty pathetic.

I identified 1 - 4, 14, 17 & 18, 20 - 22, 25 & 26.

All the rest were "Dunnos". :)

Still, cracking thread. :D

Thanks for putting in the effort - I enjoy this type of challenge - brings back memories. Any time you feel the urge - I'm interested in giving it a shot.

The final jeopardy theme music ( "Think")was written by Merv Griffin and he figures he received 70 million dollars in royalties from it.

I never heard dueling banjos on the show, but over the years they've played alot of different music on it and well could be that it was used as I haven't watch much over the past 25 years. My favorite was played once in 1975 . It was Charlie Chaplins "Smile"
