Tesco Lotus strengths its Khon Kaen presence

KHON KAEN: -- Tesco Lotus is putting up a new outlet in Nam Phong district, Khon Kaen, amid resentment from small retailers in the northeastern province.

Vice Khon Kaen Mayor Patarasak Piyananthisak said the operator, Ek-Chai Distribution System Co Ltd, in June submitted the plan to open a Lotus Express, which covers 231 square metres.

"If the application complies with the law, state officials will have to give the approval, or we could face a lawsuit for negligence. Meanwhile, before approving this application, we may need to survey the public opinion. Most of them favour the opening for higher shopping convenience," Patarasak said.

Siriwat Phosricharoenkul, as vice chairman of the retailers network in Khon Kaen, said some shops in the districts have put up banners protesting against Tesco Lotus. Retailers are also gathering force, though knowing that they may be unable to stop the expansion.

Tesco Lotus has operated 560 outlets in 60 provinces, including three in Khon Kaen.

They are also opening one at Ban Thum, next door to a NEW 7/11 (14km from city centre). They have been interviewing this week, so I guess they will be opening soon.
