I have noticed a large abundance of used shipping containers in Thailand. Is it possible for me to buy some of them? ALso, can they be used in the building of housing units? I have some very nice house designs using shipping conatiners. Would this be a possiblity in the Issan region of Thailand. How extensive are the building codes near Ubon Ratchathani? Any information will help. Thanks.

There are thousands around Laum Chabang(speelink) Commercial Port,Sri Ratcha,Chonburi.

Although they would be termite proof, I would think you would end up like a Tikka Masala after living in one in this tropical country.

A decent roof, insulation and white paint should mitigate the solar heating problem.

The problem in design that I've pondered is the width of the containers restricting interior space in some rooms.

They can stack like legos, are incredibly strong, and can provide large interior courtyards, covered and cooled as rooms or not.

I've never seen prices in Thailand, but a deadhead run from upcountry back to Chonburi should be costly, and leave some wiggle room on price if there are no return costs.

anybody?

I think the cost factor needs to be looked at more closely.

As has been mentioned above, the width of the container would preclude the use of just one. Two, side by side would be preferable, surely?. Then there is the cost of processing the two units into one, plus the roofing, insulating etc, etc, plus the transport/siting costs on top. You might find that the costs all put together would be very near that of just building a traditional low cost unit, perhaps
