Preserving Culture Vs. Racist Bastard

Featured Replies

Is philosophy really just a collection of "sound bites"?

Completely detatched from reality?

"What comes around goes around"....Yes, yes, very comforting I'm sure. Where's the reality? The Proof?

"Avoid paying the piper". "Though shalt not kill"...Blah, blah, blah.

How many people alive today, have committed murder? How many of those same people, will go on to live long lives, surrounded by their families when they die? Their victims and victims families long forgotten.

I chose murder as the most heinous of crimes......put your own crime in there.

I'll repeat the question. How many? Millions? 10's of millions? 100's of millions?

Are you really comforted by the "knowledge" that God or fate will put things right? (Avenge you?)

Regards.

Luke 22:35-36: "Jesus said... sell cloak... buy sword" :)

sell cloak... sell sword... get Krugerrand... buy bakery.

oops sorry, wrong thread.

You know anything is possible.

Considering, The first hand written English translated bibles in 1384 were done by a oxford professor Wycliffe well know for his dislike of church teaching. Since then who knows how many times it was corrected<sic>

Through out the years so many things have been removed or rewritten. Take that plus the fact that the original translation lacked words to accurately convey the original Hebrew/Greek/Latin.

Lastly it is a book written by men after all. :D

Sorry flying, we have had this before, accepting the problems with the various translations, the Bible itself was written by God. 2 Peter 1vv20-21 "Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit."

I find it odd/amusing/discomforting/.... that otherwise intelligent people quote the book to prove the book, ie for anything scientific, logical, or reasonable these people can be quite sensible but when it comes to the Bible, logic and reason flies out the door.

Any arguments that rely on self-referencing are extremely flawed and are thus spurious.

I am right because I say I am right. The Bible has been translated correctly because the Bible says it has been translated correctly. The word of God has been interpreted correctly because (the interpretation of)God's words say so.

:)

God has never to my knowledge taken pen in hand.

You confuse the written word of god as recollected by those who claim they heard his words with god writing it him/her-self.

Folks rely on the stories of men who could not even agree when they walked alongside the man they called Jesus. Now we are to assume they got it right in their recollection that had be interpreted into various languages & reinterpreted so very many times? Never once expecting the interpreter to say...." I think they meant to say"..............?

Add to that times like in 553 A.D. when the the council members of the Catholic church in Constantinople decided to strike various parts from the bible to solidify the church control & on & on though the ages that followed. I tend to think what you have today is but a shell of the original interpretation & I am not saying the original was any better as it was still written by man with all his flaws/egocentric thinking.

Suegha,

i admire people who possess a strong faith and who stand up for their beliefs. however, most cases clearly result in ridicule, pity and last not least even insults when the strong faith is aired, concentrating on what was [allegedly] written and rigidly insisting who's instructions were [allegedly] used.

Bible, Qr'an and their followers of the two holy books are examples par excellence for my claim. :)

A lot of people actually think they can avoid paying the piper, period. Ah, payback is a bitch, though, especially when you don't think you owe. :D

Sometimes you can see how a "Sins of the Father" meets "The Pendulum Swung Back Past BDC" scenario can come about.

New Zealand, a prime example.

The "SIN".

Signing the Treaty of Waitangi.

The war should have terminated with the maoris surrendering unconditionally.

Now, Kiwis are paying, payback, bigtime.

Maoris want aparthied, but financed by everyone else. Mr Obama, come save New Zealand.

which is only fair. the successors and beneficiaries of the thiefs should compensate those from whom property was stolen. :)

So many bible experts so little truth! We always have this circular argument when it comes up and frankly I wish it never would - it's just so unfruitful.

Let’s take the above statement about the interpretation of the bible for example. Where is what you allege in the bible? No, it’s not in there; in fact the bible warns that the word of God would be interpreted wrongly. The apostate churches of today have little idea of what the bible actually says and even less inclination to follow what it teaches. And flyings comment about the various councils offering their interpretation only proves my point.

The bible is just a book written so various christian faiths can put the fear of damnation into the proletariat (love that word) and more.

Believe what you wish, but as said before, it is a story written by men.

Read the same for the Koran and Tanakh / Talmud

And flyings comment about the various councils offering their interpretation only proves my point.

Yes it does prove a point. It proves the point that man wrote it & then edited it many many times. It is all there to research if you like. Even that which was removed can be found & read.

Like I have said on previous threads, let's just agree to differ and move on please.

No problem as I only responded to your comment.

I am glad you have something that strengthens your beliefs.

If it helps you then it is a good thing for you. :)

Thank you for your understanding flying. :)

When Jesus told the disciples to buy swords, it was not for warfare. His reply, "Enough!" is the rebuke of a parent to rebellious children

Suegha, it's idolatry to worship a Book as a God.

PB, you are a poster for whom I have a huge amount of respect, however, I do find your 'idolatry' comment deeply offensive! :)

and that applies to any "holy" book. God(s) do(es) not write! case closed.

It cuts both ways :)

Only if it's double-edged :D

NO.

The purchase of a weapon to ward off deadly animals - if such is actually proposed - is not suggested as a deadly weapon of offense or defense. The statement "for all who draw the sword will die by the sword" is absolute, and condemned. There are no New Testament verses that excuse violence, and many that condemn it.

The Church was 100% pacifist for its first 300 years.

Boy they made up for it after that PB.

It's surprising how minority groups under persecution wave the pacifist flag and then turn nasty when they get the upper hand.

They sold their soul to the devil, the emperor. Within 100 years, they became killers. It took until 1525 to have pacifist Christians who survived. There aren't a million of us yet.
Judaism was essentially pacifist for over 2,500 years. Jesus was a pacifist Jew.

Overturning the tables in the temple and chasing the money lenders with the violence of a whip. Seems he lost his temper on at least one passover.

No. He only chased dumb animals, with a 'whip' of grass that never touched them. Both testaments state he was so totally non-violent he wouldn't bend a blade of grass. Pacifist Jews, from King Josiah over 500 years BC, until Ben-Gurion.

Longest duration of pacifist religion - longer than Buddhism.
