During a meeting at City Hall various officials discussed ways to deal with and restrict street side congestion and traffic difficulties along the key tourist hot spots as well as discussing other minor matters.

Friday 6th November 2009 (PDN): - A meeting was held by leading officials at City Hall on Friday in relation to the congestion that has built up over time on our roads and footpaths, namely the heavy tourist and traffic areas of Walking Street and Beach Road in South & Central Pattaya. The main issue was of street side vendors stopping on footpaths and roads, restricting both foot and vehicle traffic flow, and this often occurs outside construction sites & apartment blocks.

A major topic of discussion at the meeting was issue of overhead power and telephone cables that look unsightly, and over time these are planned to be placed underground. Another matter is the restriction of vision by large street signs and neon lights, that have become a feature of the areas but need limiting in size. Some of the overhanging signs and awnings above shops, restaurants and bars are often too low and a dangerous hazard to pedestrians. These issues although important may prove very costly and at the same time difficult to resolve as co-operation between the Electricity Supply Department, the National Telecom and City Hall is needed to reach an agreement.

Also discussed at the meeting was the street side stalls in Sukumvit, Soi 5 close to Siam Country Club Road, placing their flower boxes and various other ornaments on or around the footpaths and road sides, severely impeding traffic both vehicular and pedestrian.

With an every increasing population in the region, the speed of travel on our roads also came up at the meeting, namely in the area around School 11 at Nong Yai. Some of the older school children in the district are habitually speeding up and down the road on motorbikes. The committee discussed the possibility of educating the children about the dangers of driving erratically as well as the possibility of laying further speed humps in various areas, which have proven to be an effective deterrent; - (where the roads are more six meters wide these cannot be used)

Chairperson for the meeting was Deputy Mayor Mr. Bunlue Kullavanijaya, with Khun Cantinas Sutthitham-Rongsawat and many other city officials plus the former Director of the Tourist Police, who has now been posted to a new position at City Hall. Although no definite time frame was put in place for some of these problems, it was definitely a step in the right direction for achieving a resolution of these important matters that have plagued Pattaya City for many years.

I think that the city would really benifit from another archway, this one being build over the Highway 7 Link road that will shortly be bringing visitors to Pattaya, that or a bigger sign in the bay - those are the important projects that stand out from the minor problems like parking and water pipes growing out of the sidewalk - those little things have been there for many years - not long enough to worry about doing something about them yet !

Someone called me a cynic last night !

Glad they are so concerned about overhead awnings causing a danger to pedestrians. What about the huge potholes everywhere that are likely to kill them before they get off their moto's and become pedestrians??
