Yes, using "post#..." is possible, but there are two problems:

1: in a multi page topic it can take a long time to find the post

2: From my observation, if a post is deleted by the mods for whatever reason the post numbers of the following posts change. If for example post#30 was deleted then post#31 becomes post#30 and so on.

In my opinion a link to the post under the REPLY button could solve all the problems if this is technically possible.

if the deleted post kept its post number with 'post deleted' where the post had been that wouls solve that issue and the link to the post would save time

a link to the post under the REPLY button could solve all the problems if this is technically possible is also a good idea

can i ask how you made the link for the post (link to quoted post)

So we have 3 alternatives to the current situation:

1. djc45's idea of typing "quote post#" - needs the member to scroll up to find the post (with the problem of deleted posts changing post numbers) and back down again to read the reply

2. opalhort's idea of generating a link to the quoted post - means more clicks and tabs/windows opening to read it then back to read the reply

3. my idea of changing the "Reply" button to NOT include the text from the post. Also make the "+Quote" button do what it looks like it was originally designed to do which is to add the text from the quoted post. This way newbies who just click "Reply" won't be getting all the text, but people who want to get it can.

I, of course, like my idea the best. :)

not true, opalhort posted a reply with a link to the post he was quoting and when i clicked on it the post opens in a separate window so no need for any scrolling and i could read the quote at the side of the post i was reading just the deleted ones to sort out to keep the post numbers in order

i don’t know how opalhor made the post link but it works

It isn't really difficult to do but I DO NOT suggest that we posters should have to do this. I only tried to illustrate how I think the "REPLY" button could function with the proper code for it if it is technically possible to do in the forum software.

What I like about it is that you can see the quoted text next to the reply in individual windows.

Here is how I did it:

click on the post number (#...) you want to quote and copy the link displayed, then click the current REPLY button and delete all text in the post but leave all tags in order and then insert the copied link to the post using the insert link button.

What exactly is not true? Your idea of typing the post number? :D Because that really is a non-starter.

Opalhort's idea means having two windows or tabs - again, not good.

It's pretty clear to me what the designers of this software intended, and I really can't be bothered to argue the point any more. It's all getting rather silly.

If you are responding to a post other than the original thread post you still have the quote and can use it (although if post is immediately above everyone can understand without a quote). If you are responding to the original post down beyond other questions all you have to do is indicate "OP" in your reply and everyone will know you are posting on topic to the original question.
