Has Thailand Caught Up with the 21st Century?
Today, I went to fill up my motorcycle with petrol and paid using my Wise debit card through Apple Wallet on my iPhone, simply tapping my phone on a contactless card sensor that was wireless and held out by the pump attendant. This got me thinking; has Thailand already truly embraced the 21st century to where it has everything one would need? People often say that Thailand is decades behind the West in some respects, and perhaps it is in certain ways. But in others, the country has made remarkable progress. Sure, we could spend all day pointing out the flaws, Pongsak this, Pornthip that, but I’d rather focus on the positives. These are the aspects of life in Thailand where it genuinely stacks up against, or even surpasses, life in the West. For example, I can order food, drinking water, cannabis, a massage, or even companionship through one app or another on my phone and it all gets delivered. All my banking and payments are done online, many are even automatic. I can also schedule appointments for visa and driving license renewals online whenever necessary. Healthcare and dentistry in Thailand are also excellent, prescription medicines are inexpensive, internet speeds are fast, Wi-Fi is everywhere, and cellular signals are reliable. Plus, nearly everything I need is within walking distance such as a gym, banks, supermarkets, dozens of restaurants, and 24-hour convenience stores. If I want to head out beyond my neighborhood, there’s an extensive and affordable public transport system, including electric buses, trains, and a network that leads straight to sprawling, high-tech shopping malls. So, what more do we really need that isn’t already available in Thailand? Or, flip that the other way around, what conveniences available here are still missing in the West? -

Canadian Arrested After Chaotic Car Chase in Phuket
UPDATE Two Canadians Arrested for Selling Drugs at Phuket Music Festival Picture from responders. Two Canadian nationals have been arrested in Phuket for allegedly selling drugs at the Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) Thailand 2025, one of the country’s largest music festivals. The suspects, identified as Samuel Lee Jackson and Jared Liam Wong, both aged 34, were apprehended after failing to stop at a police checkpoint in Patong. A subsequent search revealed a significant quantity of illegal substances, including: • 100 grams of ice (methamphetamine) mixed with cocaine • 6 Lorazepam pills, commonly associated with drug-facilitated crimes • 4 methamphetamine-soaked paper strips • 14 grams of magic mushrooms • 88 cocaine capsules • 50 Alprazolam pills The arrests follow increased police scrutiny at the festival, which has drawn tens of thousands of attendees to Phuket. The suspects are now in custody and face multiple charges related to drug possession and distribution. The Electric Daisy Carnival Thailand, renowned for its international appeal, has been overshadowed by recent incidents involving drug-related offences and fatalities, prompting authorities to tighten security measures. -- 2025-01-21 -

Keir Starmer’s Approach to Free Speech Risks Straining US-UK Relations
Doubtful, well at least on the matter of free speech. The British people are sensible enough to realise that there cannot be total freedom of speech - not in a world where people are so easily reached and influenced by social media. You can't just let every madman out there say what he wants. Yes, we have a growing right wing faction in the UK that might lean towards the US but overall, we are a moderate people that won't tolerate any bullying. Leaning to the US will actually be the thing that isolates Starmer. Starmer may well find himself isolated for other reasons but I for one don't give two hoots about the so called 'special relationship' if it means cow towing to a lunatic child of a president who spends a lot of his time simply lying. We are not and I believe, should never be, the 51st state of the USA. The UK should be looking to rebuild ties with its neighbours in Europe - not worrying about what Trump will do. It must also be remembered that the US has several major intelligence gathering/listening stations situated in the UK. Trump's military advisers will no doubt remind him of that if any major spats with the UK spark off. In any case, the UK's best policy is to just sit it out - Trump will be gone in 4 years and that's not so long. -
