Visa Info Chiang Khlong Please

We are planning a trip to Laos shortly.

1.

Does anyone know if it is still possible to obtain the Lao visa at the border? it used to be. There's contrary information on this on the web, but the owners of a Chiang Rai guest house have told me that their guests have been able to obtain one there.

2.

Do immigration still have an office at Chiang Khlong? I will need an re-entry permit.

If anyone has done this recently, then I would be very grateful to have these questions answered.

I believe there is a Lao visa on arrival at Huay Xai. About 1300B last I looked.

Why not pay a few baht extra and get them from a local travel agent?

Why would you need a re-entry permit? If you have a multiple entry visa there shouldn't be a problem?

Yes 3 years ago the visa was obtainable at Huay Xai, seems like no change.

I have a Non immigration B visa - 1 year extension for work permit and I very seldom leave the LOS so Multiple entry (4500 baht) is the more expensive way. Single re-entry is 1000 baht a time.

What about Thai Immigration office at Chiang Khlong?

The doggy is off an e-card I received.

Do not be deceived by his look, he has practiced it for years so he can do whatever he likes and get away with it.

As far as I know the main immigration office is at MaeSai, about a km back from the border.

The office at Chiang Khong is only like those at the MaeSai border crossing and the Golden Triangle, there to stamp arrivals in and departures out. Any serious visa stuff must be done at the main MaeSai office.

Yes, you can get a visa on arrival for Laos that is good for 30 days in Laos. Cost is 1500 baht or 30-35-42 US dollars, depending on passport nationality. (So, you save money by paying in dollars. Two banks along the main street will sell you dollars if you want.)

Obtaining a re-entry permit for getting back into Thailand is no. There has been an immigration office here. (Not the checkpoint at the border - But, a separate building on the main street - Where they did immigration matters, including re-entry permits) But, in September when I went for my usual 90 day TM7 notification, they politely informed me that the office would be closing as of the first of October. (And, I would have to do my TM7 at Mae Sai next time.)

I gather Mae Sai is the immigration center for the area now.

I live in Chiang Khong. If I find out anything different about this, I will post.

Don't forget you need one passport size photo for the Lao visa, and that there is a $1.00 extra charge if you cross the border on the weekend or after 3:00pm

yes, be careful with your re-entry permit. It can only be dealt with at your designated Immigration office , . The one where you do your yearly extension. I was nearly caught out by this . Visa on arrival 1500 baht as previously stated. Next time I'll try to get one from a travel agent here if possible. The less interaction with officials in Laos the better in my opinion .

Hi,

Sorry for reviving an old thread but I've been desperately looking for directions/address for the Chiang Khong Immigration office (not the checkpoint at the border). I'll be going to Laos via Chiang Khong and coming back the same way so need the re-entry permit. Since you seem to be having a clue about this, would much appreciate if you can provide some details.

Thanks

One week ago a friend here in Chiang Rai got a call from two friends that were stuck in Laos. They were on motorbikes and when they got over to Laos and done all the paperwork with immigration there they did not check their passports.

Coming back to the same border after a week in Laos the immigration demanded 4800 baht from each of them because they had no stamps in their passport ENTERING Laos! !

My friend here in Chiang Rai had to go up there with the money to get them back to Thailand.

At same time he had heard this was not the first time tourists to Laos had to pay an extra fee because the immigration on the Lao side had made a "mistake".

So beware everyone going to Laos to carefully check that you got your entry stamp in your passport!

<_<

noisyboy,

The Immigration Office has re-opened in Chiang Khong on a limited basis. And, you can now get a reentry permit at that Office.

The Office is located about 400 meters from the bus stop. There will be a 7/11 shop near the bus stop. From there look downhill and go toward the bridge. Cross it and proceed on up a hill that slowly turns to your left. The new Office is in a small building on the right, at the first intersection. There is a small banner outside advertising the reentry permit.

The Thai Immigration for crossing into Laos is another 1.5 kilometers further up the road.

svenivan, and others,

Yes, arriving visitors to Laos should carefully check the visa entry stamp in their passports before exiting Laos Immigrations. Several instances recently of exiting travelers having to pay $100+US fines for not having an entry stamp.

Cheers
