2 Aussies Locked Up

Featured Replies

2 Aussies, one a 16-year-old girl, have been locked up in Phuket since Friday awaiting a bail hearing. They are accused of stealing 3 vials of perfume from Phuket Airport Duty Free.

Next question; Are they guilty? or perhaps a set up. :)

Brace yourselves for the inevitable intervention of the Aussie media lambasting the Thai authorities, yet again, in defence of their globetrotters and their insatiable desire to acquire pilfered mementoes.

Does it matter? This is Thailand where if a person is arrested they must be guilty as the police do not arrest innocent people.

Is this an extension of the Swampy scam, have the people at Phuket airport just woken up to the chance they are missing for a bit of extra?

People should not judge these two without being aware of all the facts. I personally know someone who was set up at the Bangkok airport and when they realised that he was someone who had lived here for over twenty years with many local contacts they let him go immediately.

Its quite plain you are not a Australian and know little about Australian people and sound very racist to me.

Not racist in the slightest. I work with Australians and when I regaled the story of poor, victimised Annice they said that many an Australian household is decorated with such stolen memorabilia.

Sucks to be them, maybe they will think twice next.

Let me get this right. You work with some Australians and they have told you that there are 'many' Australian households decorated with stolen memorabilia, therefore you instantly brand 21 million Australians as theives. Do you know how stupid and ridiculous that sounds? :)

I see this has turned into an " Aussie " thing again.

Firstly they have not been proven guilty, lets wait for the verdict.

Secondly theft is common around the world not just Australians. As always there are good and bad in all races.

Innocent 'souveniring' again (this was how one Ozzie described the bar mat scene).

It does sound stupid and it does sound ridiculous, but there again, I never branded 21 million Australians as thieves.

Now can we move on and "group grieve" over the 2 poor victims of the Thai justice system languishing in Phuket jails.

Ok folks, lets stick to the original topic about '2 Aussies locked up' and stop the argument between 2 members. Off topic posts have been removed. Thank you.

Two aussies locked up for alleged theft.

I just wonder if the Bangkok Airport Scammers were posted to "inactive positions" in Phuket.............

What's the biggie here? A 16 year old girl allegedly shoplifted while her older 21 yr old male friend was alleged to be an accomplice.

I do wonder what a minor was doing traveling like this. Was N.H. her boyfriend, chaperone, guardian? How did she get into Thailand? I was under the impression that minors needed a letter of permission from parents/guardian to enter Thailand alone. How did she enter?

I wouldn't fret too much over the girl's temporary extended stay. Thailand is somewhat lenient with minors, and I reckon she will be put into the custody of the Australian authorities soon enough. I'm not willing to join the "it's a scam" parade, since there is no history of such scams at HKT and it's not uncommon for teenagers to shoplift. THis isn't BKK. Sometimes kids are not all little angels and sometimes they can be very stupid.

Well I'm a proud Australian, but I agree with what he has said, pretty much spot on.

One point that has been missed is that in the west vials of perfume are given away as free samples so this could be a genuine misunderstanding.

I couldn't believe it the first time I saw a stand selling these samples, at home you ask at the perfume desk and they give you a handful of these sample vials for free.

Don't know where you got that idea... both my daughters travelled alone from Canada to Phuket for visits as sixteen year olds :)

op pls contact me with an accredited news source & I will reopen the thread.
