How many people travel to Thailand with no money in their pocket?

If you are arriving and plan on buying something bring some cash, other than that, wait a few minutes until you clear immigration.

Any traveler can be asked to show 10k, 20k or 40k on entry (depending on visa/family status) and from previous reporting there were ATM machines that they could use to obtain these funds if required.

wait a few minutes until you clear immigration. That's a smart way off doing business sending your costumers away from the duty free area so they can buy something in town.

How many airport you know where they don't have a ATM machine at the airport duty free area, this called costumers service also if costumers have other than Thai Baht currency with them it's still a question off making it as pleasant and easy as possible when someone is willing to spend money.

There's a limit to how much cash (including THB) you can bring INTO Thailand.

So if there were ATMs inside, then you'd have the excuse that you only just withdrew it "from the ATM inside".

Could be, but why at other airport they have as each country has a limited unregister import of cash.

Before you go through passport control when you depart or arrive?

Departure, they are everywhere!

Arrive, sadly it's only after passport control in the arrival hall.

Before this it wasn't a problem because you have access to 3rd and 4th fl of the airport (duty free area) where there are many of currency exchanges and ATMs. Now, I think they must have forgotten! Someone should suggest this to them ASAP.

could be they way you to pay with your credit card

only reasons I can think of all have the term "scam" in them

A fact is that it hasn't any commercial reason to not have them close to the shopping venues, a political game that would be more likely.

Air side, there's little reason for cash as all the outlets take cards. A lot of people shopping there are transiting so would end up with a load of useless baht as change, so they wouldn't use them. There's just little point.

If the above airport map is correct, it's interesting that the only Thai banking outlets located inside the airport are Siam Commercial and Thai Military... no Kasikorn, no Bangkok Bank, no Krungthai, etc etc...

Wonder how much those banks had to pay, or who they had to pay, to end up with that kind of arrangement??? :)

Before this it was only the TMB. There was media attention about this before but then the deal was exclusive and yes, these two banks voluntarily pay a lot to block other banks. Kasikorn sure wasn't very happy.

If your card will work in an ATM, it will also work in the duty free shop.

I didn't know, so a ATM card (not credit card) will be exepted to purchse goods at duty free area,

Try next week, let you know

Thanks

As long as your debit card (not credit card) has a VISA or MC logo on it, and you have sufficient funds in your account, it should work with any Thai merchant who accepts cards as payment. I'm sure the airport duty free shops do accept credit/debit cards for payment.

Yes, but it can be more dangerous than credit cards.

With credit cards, you can dispute a payment made before paying up, and the money stays in your pocket during the dispute.

With debit cards, even a large fraudulent purchase is automatically and immediately debited from your account. If you complain about a fraudulent purchase (my Singaporean friend had 90,000 baht taken out at one time from a Bkk dept. store. where he bought something for 3,000 baht; the most popular dept. store as far as I'm concerned), they do a lot of finger pointing (bank, dept. store, etc.) and you don't get any of them to give your money back.

And with the reputation of the airport in here, does not seem wise to do so.

Thanks

I'd suggest to be a bit careful about prepaid debit cards, depending on where/how you obtain them.

Depending on the source, they may have issuance fees, per transaction/charge fees, an expiration date, etc etc...

They're often not the same as just using cash...

Posted

That's easy enough to research before you buy the card.

I had a lastminute.com card that I left with the gf so I could easily send cash, but they stopped issuing them. Will probably get a fairfx card next time.

I read about the Fairfx MasterCard prepaid debit cards just now.... not too bad...

Cards valid for 36 months. 1.50 Euros or $2 U.S. per ATM cash withdrawal charged by FairFx...in addition to the 150 baht Thai ATM fee (unless you're using a fee-free AEON ATM).

No per purchase fee that I can see. But if you ask them to directly refund the unused funds on your card (as opposed to drawing down your balance via ATM withdrawal), they'll charge you a fee of 10 pounds.
