More than 260,000 decorative plants will be used to beautify Bangkok for the New Year holidays, a senior official said yesterday.

Deputy Bangkok Governor Thaya Teepsuwan invited Thais and foreigners to join the city's New Year celebration at Sanam Luang from Wednesday (Dec 30) to January 9. The city's revered Buddha image, Phra Buddha Nawaratbopit, will be placed in a temporary shrine at the park so people can worship from Wednesday to January 1, she said.

On Thursday (Dec 31), a countdown party featuring Thai traditional performances will be held from 6pm to midnight. On January 1 at 7am, a alms-giving ceremony with 180 monks will be held at Sanam Luang, she said. The city would also provide free rides on trams for people wishing to make merit at nine temples around Rattanakosin Island.

It looked great last night, it reminded me of the Christmas light displays that some cities make in the west. I think I'll lug the photography equipment out early on tonight, before the partying begins.
