Internship / Work Experience

Hi all,

I have a relative, studying at a BKK university, who needs to find a work placement for 1 - 2 months in order to complete his degree in Communications / Marketing.

I assume that this placement would either be unpaid or if there was renumeration it would be minimal.

If anyone has ideas as to companies he could approach (or if your company might be willing to take on a work experience student) please add to this post or pm me.

Many thanks,

Hi,

Internships are permitted in most large companies here and I'm surprised that he hasn't asked the university to help place him. It is handled either by HR or the student may approach any department in a company directly. Normally there is no remuneration, but some companies may contribute something towards travel if he is serving some useful purpose in his time there.

Don't do his homework for him. Have him show some initiative and pick a few companies in which he may be interested and give them a call.

It is a simple conversation: "Hi I'm interested in doing an internship with your company. Is there someone, perhaps in HR, who I could speak to about this?"

Thanks for an interesting reply. As you say... Don't do his homework for him! Maybe he is just looking for an easy ride! Still, I did promise to (try to) help out. Maybe I should've kept my big mouth shut?

Any other ideas?

My stepson asked me for the same sort of assistance when he was completing his degree in business english a couple of years ago. He had already made some attempts, and had found internships at the airport (where they actually charged a fee of some 30 000 baht for the privilege of working!!!).

I was able to link him up with an expat who was attending a limited number of meetings conducted in English, and he was a "personal assistant" for this individual for a couple of months.

The feedback was that he gained far more experience from just being around a native English speaker, than other students gained from their work experience.

Incidentally, I also have a niece in the extended Thai side of the family who has completed a degree in marketing, now employed as a cashier in a hotel restaurant. I just give that information to indicate the level of work that a graduate might enter into ...........

Thanks for the info. I realise simply getting a Degree does not gaurantee a good job in Bkk with very fierce competition. Seems like you need a degree to flip burgers at McD's!

Cheers,
