Dual Nationality

Featured Replies

Hi,

Thanks for previous info on my visa question. Does anyone know what kind of visa i need to get for my daughter if i'm bringing her to Thailand to apply for dual nationality. I'm guessing a single entry O type, so if anyone can confirm this i'd be grateful as the Thai consulate in Hull wasn't sure!

Thanks

you need the Thai embassy in London to issue her with a Thai birth certificate (if she was born in the UK). The won't issue one in Thailand for her unless she was born in Thailand. Make sure you wife takes all her Thai ID along with you to get that.

Once you have the birth certificate, you need to apply for a Thai passport in London for her. She can then enter Thailand on her Thai passport.

Dont' bother going to Thailand to do it. It'll be more paperwork and bueacracy there.

If she was born in the UK, and has a UK birth certificate showing one of the parents is a Thai national, then simply go to the Thai embassy / consulate, and apply for a Thai passport. (parent's id card, marriage certificate, etc. - usual accompanying documents).

We did the visa thing on our UK-born daughter's British passport, but when we applied for a Thai passport in Bangkok, they wouldn't accept the UK birth certificate, and effectively told us to apply for the Thai passport at the embassy in London, as they will accept UK birth certificates there. (I presume the reason for this is that the embassy in London would have a better chance of telling the difference between a real and a fake UK birth certificate, and is also working in the right time zone for phoning up registrars to confirm.)

As samran says, you'll also need the embassy to do a Thai birth certificate for her, to allow you to put her onto a Tabien Baan.

Also - you don't need to apply for dual citizenship. That's simply something the child has been born with. All you have to apply for is the documents to support it...
