Unpaid Construction Workers Protest In Front Of The Pattaya Beach Resort

Featured Replies

On Thursday Afternoon, a protest took place outside the Pattaya Beach Resort, located on Pattaya Beach Road. It was led by workers from two construction companies who were employed by the Nearguard Thai Investors Company to construct the Pattaya Beach Resort. It was due to be completed by December 2008, however due to a number of delays it was eventually finished in August 2009. Final payments totaling around 10 Million Baht were then due to be paid to the two companies which would then be forwarded to the workers. This payment was not forthcoming; instead a payment of around 6.5 Million Baht was paid with the promise that the outstanding balance would be cleared in due course. The payment was not forthcoming and eventually a meeting was held where the Nearguard Company promised to pay 3 Million Baht of the outstanding balance with 10 post-dated checks of 300,000 Baht each over a 10 month period. This never materialized which prompted the protest outside the Pattaya Beach Resort which is owned and operated by the Nearguard Thai Investors Company. A stand-off took place with Police present to ensure that order would be maintained. Eventually the protesters were told that the checks would be paid shortly. The protesters promised to send the details of the case to the office of the Prime Minister if it could not be settled and they would also take legal action to recover their funds.
