I read a simmilar story decades ago.....maybe Readers Digest, but still... Telegraph/Readers Digest... same diff.

I have also watched a documentary that looked into using trained sniffer dogs to detect certain cancers in patients.....The experiment was predicated on observations of certain behaviours of pets....and proved to be fairly convincing.

But I do believe that domestic animals can sense if something is wrong. There are loads of stories of dogs barking when the house is on fire etc. The cat story is nice.
