This probably sounds odd...

My wife's got her 3rd uk visa and we also plan a brief trip to Sweden. A mate at work (often full of ****) said he got his wedding certificate stamped by the British embassy, and then the French embassy just looked at it and gave his wife the (Schengen) visa free of charge and without the need for any other documents, such as insurance. The British embassy had never heard of this and the Swedes said they'd need insurance. Please someone either tell me they've heard of this before or confirm my colleague's jackanory skills.

Your friend is correct. It's called a EEA/Swiss Family Permit and it is free. :o

Reading the page detailed below (from the UK visa site), I think you will need to go to the Swedish (or maybe the French would be easier) embassy to get one. Worth a shot. It would also appear that this permit does NOT get your wife into your home country.

Q: I am an EU/EEA national. My wife/husband/child is a visa national. Do they need a visa to join me permanently in the UK?

A: She/he will need an EEA/Swiss Family Permit issued at a UK visa office overseas before she/he travels. You must either travel to the UK together, or your family must be joining you in the UK. Family permits are issued free of charge.

Q: How do I get a family permit?

A: A family permit can be applied for at any British mission overseas. Your family must apply for one prior to travelling to the United Kingdom.

Please read our EEA & Swiss nationals (INF 18) for more information.
