I have had water softeners in Canada in the past and they all worked on the resin/salt method. The water where we are building our house is highly calcified so I plan on installing a softener but came across this:

Whole House Fliter

This looks like it uses the same mineral (Zelbrite/Zeolite) as some swimming pool filters.

Question? Has anyone had any experience with this method?

water softeners are available locally but resin based only. they work perfectly without salt. i installed one ~4 years ago and after the bi-monthly backwash i have to adjust the bypass valve because the water is too soft. price including carbon filter (2006) 12,000 baht. in the U.S. i installed fully automatic unit which used salt but the results were not better.

I wasn't sure they were really needed here in Pattaya? Do you have city water or a well??? The next job for me in finishing our house is to deal with water filters! But for drinking water, for now, we are just going to use bottles. Figure I don't have to visit the gym as often...

Thanks Naam, my understanding of the systems I had before was that the resin was positively charged when the salt was pumped thru it. Then the resin would attract and hold the minerals. When it could no longer hold anymore then you needed to backflush the minerals out with a salt bath again. This was all done automatically. The time between recharges depended on the hardness of the water and the amount of use. I was quoted between 20,000 and 29,000 baht for one of these units here.

So if the system you have does not use salt then it must be one of these Zeolite units. Glad to know it works well.

Naam, could you please let us know which softener system you are using. I am building i Pranburi and the well water i very hard while the TD is rather high. The high TD can be filtered away but I have still to find a good softener.
