Royal British Legion

I posted the message below on AWOL forum on 20th Feb - no response. I'm sure there are some UK ex-pats who would be interested - maybe selected the wrong medium. Let's Sea (local joke) if there is any response on this forum.

I have been living full time in Hua Hin now for 2 years and before that in Pattaya, where I am a member of the Royal British Legion. The branch has 2 sub-branches - Bangkok and Chiang Mai.

Some of you will recall that I started selling poppies in Hua Hin last November and, without the assistance of Bill (Buffalo) and Dave Cunningham (Hua Hin Meat & Bacon), we would not have reached the excellent figure of just over 6,000 baht. Not bad for a first attempt. I am aiming to better that this year and would welcome offers from well patronised bars to assist by holding a collection box even if only for a couple of days.

I would like to test the interest in setting up an RBL sub-branch here in Hua Hin, to include Cha Am. All that is needed is 15 members, who are not necessarily required to have served in HM forces. Plus a venue, basically a bar where the owner would be keen to see regular get togethers of ex-pats/ex-forces. The one in Pattaya is run from Tropical Bert's bar and Bert acts as the Secretary of the branch.

We go each year to Kanchanaburi for Anzac Day ceremonies (April 25th), including the dawn service in hel_l Fire Pass. Also we attend the British Embassy Remembrance Sunday ceremonies; the current Ambassador permits us to use the Embassy Social Club for a get together afterwards. Other outings include trips to Malaysia and Burma to visit war graves and intermingle.

The Pattaya, or Chon Buri Branch as it is officially called, also organises 'cultural' weekends, race days in Bangkok (followed by racy evenings!). Also fund raising activities in conjunction with the various businesses in Pattaya, aid the local Thai orphanage and collections of beer can ring pulls are sent to aid the production of artificial limbs for mine victims.

I know there are many ex-forces here in Hua Hin as I have met some of you in the places I frequent. So - volunteers please for

1. Branch meeting place - local bar

2. Possible membership

3. Active membership - secretary, chairman
Hi Mate

No one reads that rag.

Go and see some old timers in Hua Hin like Barry at the Victoria and the guy that runs the Shed, put the poster up in their premises.

Yes I've mentioned this to Richard (the guy who runs the Shed) - but got no further. Will look at the victoria after my relatives go back to UK at the end of the month. Thanks for your comment - I assume you are not interested?

I support the poppy appeal sure mate, though I do my bit on Anzac Day. Speak to the Brits, loads of em in Hua Hin. I am sure Barry will help. Perhaps Richard has too much on.
