Finally also ToT offers 1Mbps upload speed with their new "Power Fit" packages.

Prices are:

Basic Fit with 512 kbps up:

XS 2M 490

S 4M 590

M 6M 790

L 8M 1000

Power Fit with 1024 kbps up:

XS 2M 590

S 4M 690

M 6M 890

L 8M 1100

The 12 Mbps package, which was advertised on ToT envelopes, seems to be not available in all areas.

I changed the contract today from 3 Mpbs / 512kbps to 8M/1M.

Athough the typical international throughput on my current line is below the line speed, I can enjoy the full speed during off-peak hours and /or using multithreaded downloads. Furthermore I use Thai mirrors for SW upgrades, to which I get maximum speed.

I dont expect too much from the new line speed, but nightly off-peak hour down and uploads should benefit.

Last Friday we submitted a request to install the Simple Fit 8M/1M service with a second phone line. The TOT Service Center rep who took the application said they must ensure they can service my home first and they will call once confirmed. Kinda strange since I'm on a TOT line and had their internet service before. I'm now with JI-NET (excellent/reliable 2MB service but a kinda pricey and they don't have any faster service). Had TOT Goldcyber 2M before for a about 6 weeks but dropped the package because of poor reliablility and slow international access. But I'm will to give TOT another chance...if they ever call back...plan to visit the service center in a few days in case I don't get a call.

Was wondering if you could post some Speedtest.net results to points in the U.S. like Atlanta and San Franciso. Very interested in some more speed specifics on how well (or bad) your new 8M/1M TOT service works. Thanks.

To summarize my experience: I can fully recommend my new ToT "Power Fit" package.

Today at noon, 24h after we filed the application, my internet was gone. I had to enter the new username "@tothome8m". After this, internet was back, but my line speed still 3M/512k.

Anyway, I did some performance tests and saw already a significant performance boost. Usually I got 40-80 kB/s for a download from my server in Germany. Now I got a strong and constant 160 kB/s. This speed remained the same, even in the evening when it usually drops to 20-30 kB/s. I compared the speed with my neighbors old 3M platinumcyber package over his open WLAN: There 20-40 kB/s, here 160 kB/s, even during busy hour!

Later in the evening, ToT called and reported that the 8M would be ready, but the uplink is only 700k. They want to check the line later.

Checking the performance again with my new 8M, I found a slight increase in the download speed from my reference server in Germany. It was now about 180 kB/s. During busy hour! Multiple threads can utilize the full line speed. So I got over 800 kB/s from a mirror server in Germany, using a multithreaded download manager. Means a CD image in less than 15 minutes!

Also the upload speed can be fully utilized, in my case only 715 kbps. But what I got is already more than I expected. Lets hope they can fix the line to provide 1024 kbps, but if not, I can live with what I have.

I live in BKK Prawet, about 4km west of the airport. Here is only ToT available and their performance was terrible when we moved in. I was looking desperately for an alternative, but there is none here. ToT improved a lot over the time, already with the platinumcyber package. With what we got now, I feel finally re-connected to the civilization... :)

I just wonder what happens if too many subscribers switch to the new packages. Maybe it was a fault to write this positive review....

Stefanix,

Big thanks. But sure would like to get some "speedtest.net" speed results to Atlanta and SF, especially the download results. Since most of my web surfing is to the USA I most interested in that access speed. And since more major web trunks/undersea lines from Southeast Asia seem to run to the USA first and then on to Europe, it wouldn't surprise me if the access to the USA is faster than to Europe. Thanks in advance if you are able to run the test to the USA.

As I mentioned above, I applied for the 8M/1M Power Fit service last Friday and was told TOT will contact me/call me soon. The Thai wife and I when back to the service center at Lotus late today/Wednesday to mention TOT had not called back yet. The TOT service center rep said she had sent in the application last Friday, was still waiting for TOT HQ to give a response since business was so brisk on the most recent TOT internet promotion, said it could be another week, and said she would call as soon as TOT HQ processed the application.

Cheers,

Pib

Whoops...you posted the Atlanta and SF results while I was writing/posting my other reply...passing in the night. Big thanks.

Update: My uplink is fixed now. After restarting the modem, I have full 1M uplink. The wrong Annex was selected. It was A instead of M.

BTW: My cyberlink package used G.DMT, the new package uses ADSL2+.

Pib: Checked speedtest again. US download speed is constantly a bit lower than Europe / Frankfurt. On the other hand ping times are lower than to FRA. Probably you are right that traffic uses fibers to US. Have to check with traceroute. I would not take those speedtest results too serious, I think it depends also on server load. They give just a very rough idea.

Thanks. Sounds like you initially had some modem setup problems.

Did TOT provide the modem or did you have/buy your own? And did TOT provide any modem setup instructions? Figure I might as well get some advance knowledge/how-to-fit-it info, since it will probably be next week earliest before TOT gets around to hopefully installing the package. Of course the upcoming Red Shirt event here in Bangkok could slow things down even more.

What may be slowing down my package request is I want the TOT package installed on a second phone line (also to be TOT installed).

As I had a ToT platinumcyber package already installed, I could reuse the existing modem. No fee for the package change. I am not sure how it is with a new package today. Usually they include a simple modem/router. If you want WLAN, you have to pay extra.

If you want to use an existing modem, it should support the used ADSL modulation, usually G.DMT or ADSL2+. I think the latter one is used commonly for new lines, but can depend on the region.

My ADSL modem/router provided by ToT is a simple Million BiPAC 5210S. It has just one Ethernet port. I use it only as dumb modem (bridge mode) and have a Linksys WLAN router behind it for the PPP protocol, WLAN access point and some more Ethernet ports.

Anyway, my settings in case you need them to configure things yourself:

ADSL plus, Annex M

VPI=1, VCI=32, LLC

Router settings (can be on your combined modem/router or a separate router):

PPPoE

Username: 02xxxxxxx@tothome8m

Password: 02xxxxxxx

There might be a shortage of DSLAM ports (connecting your physical phone line in the ToT office to the internet) in your area because of the new package promotion. This is independent if your phone line is new or existed already.

Good luck and hopefully welcome back to civilization soon! :)

Thanks. It was your earlier Annex M setting that was throwing me as my current modem don't have a menu setting like your modem to select the ADSL protocol in case it doesn't automatically select the correct protocol. My modem is ADSL2 Plus capable according to its data sheet; guess it picks the correct protocol automatically (I hope). I'll continue to wait for TOT's call (I wonder if they charge themselves 3 Baht when they make a call?) :)

I think 3.3 km is close to the limit. But it depends also on the quality of the cabling :) as well as how many other phone lines running parallel do have a DSL signal as well. This can cause interference.

If you have already DSL, your modem can show the line attenuation. In my case its around 29 dB downlink and 15 dB uplink, which is high (means bad), but obviously still OK for 8M/1M.

Coming back to the ADSL versions: My BiPAC modem has a ToT firmware with their specific default settings. This includes "auto sync" for the basic ADSL protocol, e.g. it selects ADSL2+, ADSL2, G.DMT, and some others it supports automatically. For the Annex version, there is also an automatic selection possible, e.g. A/M/L/I. The default setting here is "A/L" only. With those default settings the modem selects ADSL2+ with Annex A. And this seems to be the standard setting of ToT, I have seen it on other modems around (most modems have web access open and default passwords...).

Annex M reserves a bit more bandwidth for the uplink and would allow up to 3M uplink, while still having enough room for the downlink (up to 12M as far as I remember). With selecting Annex M, the uplink becomes more stable, if only 1M used.

Conclusion: with the ToT default settings I would have a degraded uplink (not sure if ToT would have done the modem setup like I did). I think a good uplink is important, e.g. for uploading photos, Skype (HD), etc. That's why I was thrilled when I heard that ToT offers finally a faster uplink.

If your modem does not have any Annex selection, I would assume that it selects the best version automatically.

Good point about line quality, i have 20/40 up/down. A good (new) line, but 3.3km away :)

With ADSL2+, 8-10Mbit should be possible according to this handy chart on wikipedia:

ADSL_Line_Rate_Attenuation.gif

Thanks a lot for the tips on ADSL settings. I wanted to install a better quality modem than the TOT provided one, but I guess I never got the settings right. It always ended up disconnecting a lot. With the TOT provided modem, it's pretty stable.

Here a link to an ADSL Max Speed calculator/estimater for your phone/ADSL line. Basically, enter your current ADSL/internet package speed, and your modem's measurement of your line attenuation and noise numbers. It give you a couple of results for max speed for ADSL and ADSL2.

Seems to be the same as the graph on Wikipedia, though I am not sure how the current speed factors in. My max. is supposed to be 10Mbit using ADSL2+... wow!!

Does anyone know if you get any email or hosting services as part of the Basic Fit or Power Fit packages? If so, can you provide any configuration details, or a link. Thanks.

When I got TOT's Basic Fit 4Mb package about three months ago, no email logon information was provided; only the modem logon user id and password.. Now when I signed up for their 2Mb Goldcyber for a short while around 2 years ago I did get an email address/info.

The only info about email I've seen on the support web site is at: TOT Q&A-ใช้งาà¸à¸£à¸±à¸à¸ªà¹ˆà¸‡à¹€à¸¡à¸¥à¹Œà¸à¹ˆà¸²à¸ MS Outlook à¸à¹‰à¸à¸‡à¹ƒà¸Šà¹‰à¸„่า smtp อย่างไร And you find out all it says is: "Use MS Outlook to send mail via smtp to use a how: Customers who use TOT's ADSL service and use it to send mail via Microsoft Outlook TOT enabled by using the smtp smtp.totisp.net."

I didn't really care as I use my gmail email addresses; I just need access to the internet in order to reach gmail.com or whatever email service a person wants to use. When I was with JI-NET you selected your email address during signup, but once again after setting up the JI-NET email for pop3 use, I never used my JI-Net email address; used my gmail addresses instead. And I seriously doubt I would use a TOT email address, but it would be nice to know if email comes with their newest plans; I don't thing it does in the sense we are use to.

Buy maybe another TOT user out there on the Basic Fit/Power Fit programs knows exactly how the email works (if it comes with a specific email address) and will give us the details on how to set it up. Cheers.
