Problem=

to make my bicycle saver (it's a low rider recumbent)I want to add LED light strips.

My bike has a hub dynamo producing 6V and 3 W out put. The strips need 12V.

Doable without adding too much balast?

You'll need a boost converter to power your LEDs from 6V.

Are you handy with a soldering iron? I have several suitable circuits :)

You MAY be able to use a Greinacher diode-capacitor voltage doubler circuit as most bike dynamos are actually alternators and produce low frequency AC http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Greinacher_circuit.svg

Or you could re-wire the strip for 6V :D

This Application Note has some ideas, mostly buck (step down) converters but a couple of boosters too AV02_0532EN.pdf

I had my Chaly converted from 6v to 12v (needed it for the engine swap) It's not hard as much as it is annoying. I mean it's like wrestling an octopus.
