The Darkside Of Pattaya

Featured Replies

Just a quick one, what exactly is "The dark side" refer to? I've seen the phrase a few times and just wondered why? Also what area does this cover on the map e.g. 3rd road back to Suki rd etc

The darkside side is basically everything east of Suk road.

Everything between Sukhumvit and the beach is Pattaya proper, the other side of Sukhumvit is called the "dark side", or by the real estate companies "East Pattaya".

West side of Sukhumvit, Pattaya proper, comes under the jurisdiction of Pattaya City Hall with Mayor Ittiporn. East side of Sukhumvitm the so-called Darkside, comes under Nongprue Council with Mayor Mai Chianit.

It's TRUE! Most of the falang residents have either been infected, or, in rare cases, are immune. But it is not advisable for those who do not live on The Darkside to venture there. Stay on the 'bright side', with all of its' ... umm ... excitement. ;-)

Cheers, any idea why it's called "the dark side"

The local government on that side of Suk used to be cheapskates: No streetlights.

It’s a comparison thing.

The term Darkside came about due to the lack of street lighting as against the bright City lights of Pattaya.

If you venture down the Maphrachan Lake area after dark you will see what I mean as there is little in the way of street lighting.

Once you cross the railway line east of the Sukhumvit road you’re into Darkside territory which is run by a different authority than Pattaya therefore does not have the benefit of the tourist dollars that pour into Pattaya every day.

It’s an area most expats chose to live in as its more peaceful than the thump, thump, thump that Pattaya serves up which if you’re not a tourist can get in your face.

Have you tried wandering around Pattaya on Buddha days when the bars are closed? Seems to me that it's pretty dark in town as well without the bars. Not too much in the way of street lighting.

I heard that the term THE DARKSIDE,was started by Lee who owned Nois bar, since passed away tragically,in a road accident.

Hope they throw the keys away if they ever prosecute the woman/or guy who murdered Lee
