Got in a meter taxi the other day from suvarnabhumi and the <deleted> started the meter at 75 baht plus additional 50 baht surcharge when we completed the journey is this correct? Or was he taken the piss? never said anything just paid it never wanted any hassle with the current situation…

basic fare is 40baht.

looks, like he tricked you by 35baht - when getting into the taxi make sure, that you are not charged the previous passenger fare

Upon entering the cab at the airport you should have received a two part-receipt with the taxi number and info on it. That is your

reference paper if anything goes wrong.

if not mistaken, the basic flag (start fare) is at 35 baht for the 1st Kilo and 2 baht subsequent 200 meter thereafter. (also there is a waiting/idling fee) once the flag is dropped such fees kick in usually during heavy traffic or long signal light waits)

The additional 50 baht fee is a normal taxi charge imposed at Suvanarbhumi & D.Muang Airports.

Wow...an extra buck or two.....try going one block in the USA for a buck......

He wasn't in a taxi in the USA.

Would you gladly pay double fare in a taxi in USA yourself?

No...meter starts at 35. Then you pay the meter fare plus 50 (from the airport only) plus any tollways. To Victory monument it's about 360 depending on route selected.

I don't use taxis in the USA for that reason, too dam_n expensive... On the other hand I don't stand and haggle a Thai merchant for 15 minutes over 10 baht on a shirt as I have seen many do. Thailand, I don't mind paying double fare although I don't make it a practice.....but usually when my fare is 100 baht I will tip almost the same amount if the driver is pleasant.....

What if he is not pleasant? Do you give him a mouthful? :)

The Thai taxi drivers are very cunning, usually listen to the dam_n politics update or some Isan music.

Get a receipt and if you have a problem. Most taxis have one now, printed electronically.

There is a number you call call. He has his name and details on the dashboard, sitting on the left-hand side.

More than likely he was driving around with the meter on until he picked you up or you paid for the previous fare.

Becareful.

Market/side stall haggling is all part of the fun. Its normal & expected in many countries, but maybe not in USA where one usually has to pay a tax ON TOP of displayed prices.

and then he will be laughing at you behind your back talking to his colleagues about the "stupid farang with money too much."

Just like the girls in Pattaya do about guys who ring the bell in a bar.

If you did use a taxi in USA & the driver was very pleasant, polite & helpful, would you double the fare?

As soon as you jump in the taxi just tell him to switch on the meter...or you jump out....35 Bt for starters then......

Late at night you might need to negotiate/bribe the guy ...usually a blok although there are quite a few womwn drivers.

Incid has that wee Airport train started puffing yet...toot toot...or is it delayed again..???

Next joli in June :)
