License Plates

Featured Replies

The license plate on my 18 year old Merc has a strange logo at one end of the plate. It is a vertical rectangle, blue background with a circle of stars (white colour and similar to the EU logo) at the top of the rectangle and with a capital D (also in white) at the bottom of the rectangle.

I have seen this on other vehicles but my wife is not able to tell me what it all means. Anybody out there can enlighten me? :)

It is the EU logo, the plate is an EU plate look alike. These plate holders are all over (you can get the holders at many markets). For some odd reason they seem to be only available for Germany (D).

Be aware that if the original Thai plate has to be cut to make it fit, or the holder obscures any of the plate text, you're open to making donations to the BiB :)

As to why?

Given that the plate has been on the car from new then I reckon it is not breaching any law.

Doubt EU plate/Deutschland is 18 years old, they became fashion approx 8 years ago, and its probably illegal. Max fine is 1.000 baht.

Yup^^^

The EU format plate has only been in use in Germany since 1994 (16 years ago). http://en.allexperts.com/e/g/ge/german_car_number_plates.htm
