I suppose the best alternative would be to install a filter system on the tap. I see a lot of those in Canada, and (in most places) our water is so purified, goldfish can barely survive in it !

If you have a filter system (and change the filters regularily), then it wouldn't matter as much whether the water came from the dregs of the resevoir or from the tanker trucks.

Speaking of tanker trucks, I'm guessing there's no Public Health inspectors checking those things to see if they ever clean their tanks. When I was in the army, our medics checked our water trailers on a regular basis, and then made us clean them out with a chlorine (bleach) solution.

Even our "stored" water had to have chlorine added to it if it was going to be in the tank (or jerry cans) for more than a week.

Oh yeah (back on topic): Is it raining in Pattaya yet ? I'm back in August, and it would sure be nice to take a normal shower (and be able to flush the hong nam normally again) !

Unless the water trucks collect their water from the Eastern Water Authority depot at Nakhlua, none of it is checked for contaminants.

I've seen water tankers drawing water from roadside swamps.

I think you and Bojangles need to try new rain dances. The ones you're using are clearly not very effective!

Just about all water available in Pattaya, tap and bottled, originates from rainwater collected in reservoirs. This means the amount of electrolytes (minerals) is very low. The more expensive brand name bottled water usually has minerals added.

Additionally, some purification methods like reverse osmosis and distillation removes most (if not all) of the minerals.

The long term problem with this is that if you drink a lot of this water without taking in enough minerals with you food or in supplements you can get various mineral deficiencies. Initially you will feel tired and have headaches but more serious problems will occur.

The main short term problem is if drinking a lot of this water after heavy perspiration you will reduce the electrolyte concentration in the body. If this concentration is reduced enough electrical impulses will not be able to travel as they should in your body, this can result in the heart stopping or in cramps. This is what happens when perfectly healthy athletes suddenly drop dead from “unexplained” heart failure.

If you need to drink a lot of water always add some electrolytes, can be bought at any pharmacy for a few bath. Also good as a hangover remedy, preferable taken before going to bed but who can remember that.

Been kind of gray with a lot of drizzle last two days...

But even this light, but almost continious, rain makes the creeks feeding Mabprachan lake swell pretty impressively!

Another 10 months of this continious gray weather might see it get filled

It would be nice to have a normal water supply when I get home again (late August ?). Using the bucket and bowl routine sucks, especially if the bucket (large plastic garbage can actually), has had water in it for a few days.

When we got snow here in Dec/Jan, I was telling everyone that it was because of the naked snow dances I was doing at nights on the camp. Maybe if I did naked rain dances on the roof of my apartment it would help ?

At least it would give the neighbours something to talk about, instead of the lack of water !

Jai Dee, I just got back to the UK this morning but danced my feet off for 2 weeks whilst there. The first few days it sort of, well, you know when you try to spit but your mouth is too dry. Well, is was spitting like that but the day before i came home it really had a good try. As i stay in the Hotels, there is never a shortage of water but it can't be nice for those of you who have. Hope you all get much more of it........ Until i come back in a couple of months of course

There's about 2 dozen of my co-workers heading to LOS in September (getting out of town during thr Afghani elections I suspect). Most of them are going to be scattered around the country, but a couple of us will be in Pattaya.

I don't mind the rain too much, but my boss is a little concerned. He's meeting his wife and flying to Koh Samui for a week, doesn't want to spend the whole time under an umbrella (that's a "brolly" for you folks from that wee little island just north of Europe !)

I don't have to worry as I got an 90 m deep well, although there is still water coming out my city water meter 24/7 for the moment...

Lake Mabprachan looks absolutely horrible. Even last year the levels started to rise early August, seems it's not happening now

Petition demands urgent action from PM on water crisis

Local organizations say they aren’t receiving the full truth

Private organizations in Pattaya have presented a petition to Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, calling for urgent action on the water crisis.

Thanet Supornsaharungsi, president of Pattaya Business and Tourism Association (PBTA), and Bundarik Kusolvitya, Thai Hotel Association-Easter Chapter (THA-EC) president, handed the petition to local MP Chanyuth Hengtrakul on August 16 for onward transmission.

The committee that organized the petition said that the private sector, along with the general public, has yet to see any clear progress in rectifying the current lack of water in the region.

Thanet said the situation has worsened and has become a matter of urgency.

“Business operators and residents are facing severe difficulties, especially as we approach the coming tourist season,” he said. “The main problem is that the responsible departments and companies - the Department of Irrigation and East Water Company - have reported that there is just enough water. That couldn’t be further from the truth.”

Thanet went on to say that the business community is not receiving the full facts and it is clear that the problem is getting worse with no resolution in sight.

Both the PBTA and THA-EC joined forces to present a clear case to give to the prime minister, complete with details of the real problem the region is facing. The document calls for earnest efforts in helping solve the water shortage on a short, medium and long term basis, as well as other suggestions including the request of a 400 million baht budget for a desalination plant and additions to the rainmaking project.

I think it will take the proverbial 40 days and nights of rain to help the situation in Pattaya.

An entire ocean sitting there, and all they do is talk. My landlady has been buying water for our building since December ! Same for the hotel across the street and pretty much everyone else in our area (South Pattaya).

If they don't get some monster rains soon, it's going to get ugly. Then again, when the rains do come, half the city will be flooded (feast or famine).

24% water siphoned from other resevoirs and resold to the Water Board

1 % natural rainwater

My numbers could be off a bit. It might be 60% recycled sewage, 39.5 % resold water and .05% natural

A little cynical, a little jealous that I don't have my finger in the pie.

I wouldn't expect corruption in a country that is predominately Buddhist, whose people believe in principles such as Right Living, Right Thinking" and so on.
