Which is the one to get? Up to date, easy to read, public transport clearly marked, generally useful for planning which is the best method to get from A to B in the 'usual places' in Bangkok.

depends on what area you want to be covered.....downtown only or the suburbs and greater bangkok area as well......

the NELLES Map is not a bargain, about 200 BT or so, but its very good, one very detailled map of the donwtown area, including BTS and MRT stations, and on the backside a very good map of greater Bangkok.

if you want the GREATER BANGKOK area including a listing of all busses the best value for money is the dead-cheap (50 Baht !!) and excellent map "Bus Routes & Map" of Bangkok, published by Bangkokguide (www.bangkokguide.co.th). the problem is, its just too cheap so many bookstores are not interested to sell it. But I know the SE-ED stores used to have it.....

if you want to do some research at home, buy the awesome CD-map "Map-Magic Bangkok 2004-2005" by Thinknet. its the best thing I have seen so far, a great search function (for example, you can search for buildings, shops, sights....anything) and is only 299 Baht, including a printed map. I use the CD almost every day while working on my laptop.....get it at SE-ED too, but make sure to buy the BILINGUAL Version, as there is a THAI ONLY version as well (which is only 249 baht, as far as I remember)

Carrefour Changwatana Branch (G Floor)

there is also a map magic for thailand , both excellent resources , zoom in zoom out , print selected sections , also gives you GPS co-ordinates , can switch between english and thai , do a screen grab to save as a JPEG for reference on your PDA...etc

for the money they are well worth it if you like to know where you are :o

I got my bus route map at the SE-ED in Bang Kapi, and my MapMagic in some mall on Silom, right off of Sala Daeng.

The Map Magic is great, and the map is based off of satellite photos, so the geopraphy is perfct .... but the names of the streets aren't always.

There are several different transliteration systems used and occsionally the soi numbers are off slightly.

But really helpful, none the less. Great for finding markets, malls, gas stations, bookstores, temples, schools, etc etc ..... Just take the names ith a grain of salt...

The Bus Maps from Bangkok guide are really good and cheap.

Thaiways offers their maps on the web, and free paper versions are available at many locations, such as tourist kiosks and hotel lobbies.

Of the commercially available folding sheet maps, I find the Lonely Planet Bangkok City Map to be more detailed and accurate than either the Nelles or the 'blue' bus maps (unless, of course, you're taking city buses, and then the blue map is a necessity, though far from correct). Last I checked, for example, the Nelles still didn't show Rama VIII Bridge. The Periplus Bangkok map is pretty good also.

For finding locations that aren't hotels, tourist attractions, major architectural landmarks or Buddhist temples, the most detailed source is Bangkok Map, a 196-page, thoroughly indexed, 1:8,000 scale, hardcover atlas published by the Agency for Real Estate Affairs. The edition I have dates to 1998 so it's out of date but still useful for anything built before that year. Here's a sample from the atlas:

It's available around BKK or from

The problem with Bangkok Map is the lack of a street index.

I'm used to maps indexed by streets, not buildings.

I'm new to BKK so not sure if it would be everyone's cup of tea but I found Nancy Chandler's Map to be really useful, the most recent one includes the subway stations and it has separate maps of central and greater bkk, sukhmvit road and chatuchak market. Also includes a small book which gives details of bars restaurants, hotels, sports clubs etc and references them on the map. I got mine from 7/f central chidlom for 180bt
