The one and only

I was in a hotel bar in Abu Dhabi about 1999 minding my own business as usual...there was a band that no one was listening to and they were lackluster in response...then there was a commotion and a short, fat guy in a dirty t-shirt approached the stage...he then took the offered Gibson double cutaway from the front man and whaled on The Thrill is Gone...burned down the place, he did...

afterwards I asked and someone said that he worked in the oil fields and stops by the bar when in town...I managed to sidle up and said 'that was a good one; you sounded like a professional...' he said 'I useta be but the money was no good...'

I finished my drink and left, puzzled...

  • 5 months later...

The Chambers Brothers "Wade In The Water," recorded live at Fillmore on May 29, 1968 and appearing on their "Love, Peace and Happiness" LP. Turn it up!

The Chambers Brothers live rendition of "People Get Ready," originally penned by Curtis Mayfield and performed by The Impressions. This song was inspired by the civil rights March on Washington led by Martin Luther King. A great version.

The Stones with "Street Fighting Man" off their 1968 Beggars Banquet LP. Also featured as the last track of the movie, "V for Vendetta."

And from their 1969 "Let It Bleed" LP, "Gimme Shelter." A slight delay at the beginning of the video but otherwise a quality track . . .

Here's a few for Tutsi. Stay on the road, now . . . :whistling:

Emmylou Harris live in '77. This tune is titled "Poncho and Lefty" and is off her "Luxury Liner" LP. And an all-around classic LP it was. I must confess Emmylou was a heart throb. She has that sort of girl-next-door look that just turns me on. And she certainly has aged gracefully.

And of course the LP's title track, "Luxury Liner."

What the hell, let's enjoy the rest of the show. I'm not bored. These tunes are all off the "Luxury Liner" LP.

c'est la Vie

Tulsa Queen

hey...all right...righteous thread revived...

I was listenin' to this last night, alone with vodka on de lonely north central coast on VN...

this one was gonna be a 'traditional blues' tune, sorta like no one knows who wrote it but who cares...recorded by too many to mention...I like Little Walter's version as it retains the delta 'field moan' effect...

'if the river was whiskey an' I was a divin' duck...' was added somewhere along the way...

yahs, yahs....

I always thought that the singer in Fine Young Cannibals was the sexiest man on this earth... Until my friend introduced me to Keanu.

But, I did watch FYC video and loads of good memories came flowing back....

Maybe I am attracted to Asian like men!!!

Perhaps the word "high" came into the fact that it was the most romantic song!!!

Aretha, baby! Here's her 1967 classic "Chain Of Fools," released on her 1968 "Lady Soul" LP. What a voice!

And she'll teach you a bit 'o respect as well, from the 1967 LP, "I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You." Originally written by Otis Redding.

Classic Marvin Gaye from 1968, "I Heard It Through The Grapevine." This tune was played every 5 minutes on good old AM radio when I was a freshman sopohmore fifth grader bit younger.

And "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" from '71.

Local to Chi-town, are ya? Well, you'd remember one of Chicago's very own '60s products, the Cryan Shames. No, it probably isn't timeless but the scratches on this old 45rpm probably are. From the 1968 LP, "A Scratch In The Sky" we have this little psychedelic number, "The Sailing Ship."

And from 1967, we get the A-side AM classic, "It Could Be We're In Love." But wait . . . there's more . . . As most songs were in the 2~3 minute range during those times (many songs longer in duration had 2 or even 3 shorter versions cut specifically for airing on AM radio) we also get the B-side track, "I Was Lonely When," just to remind us once again that it wasn't all good back then.

And now presenting another timeless classic tune, not for it's musical genius, but because this number has to be the all-time sappiest song ever written and performed. Allow me to introduce the thoroughly pussy-whipped Bobby Goldsboro!!!

Thaivisa having problems? My excuse for the double-post. Anyways . . .

Fraternity Of Man member Lawrence Wagner's (in)famous "Don't Bogart That Joint My Friend" was done up by many. Perhaps my favourite version is one performed by Country Joe & The Fish.

And who can forget Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen's "Down To Seeds and Stems Again Blues?"

And one more classic number in the same vein, Canadian-born Jesse Winchester's "Twigs and Seeds" off of his 1977 release, "Nothing But A Breeze." Quite humourous lyrics, I might add.

Winchester was a somewhat obscure artist during the late '60s and '70s but for those who happened upon him he certainly put out some memorable tunes. This pretty little tune titled "Yankee Lady" is a live version. The original received it's share of airtime on FM radio at the time and is off his self-titled 1970 debut, "Jessie Winchester."

George Lowell and Little Feat on "Fat Man In The Bathtub," the live version from their live 1978 double LP, "Waiting For Columbus."

And a nice 1977 performance of "Willin'."

Lowell George was really somethin'...I was introduced to his music when I was 'up in the woods' in Oregon by Linda Ronstadt and her covers of his songs...nice stuff I sez...rough an' tumblin'

then I quit the woods and returned to California where I belonged and was enrolled in a calculus class at Santa Monica College where there was a quiet, unassuming student who wore white dash board overalls with LOWELL GEORGE emblazoned on the front...interesting, as he was the best student and intended to transfer to Cal Tech (California Institute of Technology where all the Jet Propulsion Laboratory 'rocket scientists' come from...Cal Tech is in Pasadena where I come from...my sister whom when she was young looked like the actress Salma Hayek was dating some Cal Tech scientist and met the astrophysicist Stephen Hawkings...she said: 'hey tutsi...you shoulda seen this guy...all bent up inna wheelchair and could hardly talk an' all these scientists were fallin' all over themselves...it was a crack up...' this was mid 70s...

yeah, Lowell George and the connection between logging in the Pacific Northwest and rocket science...someone take the story and run with it!:)

and, her she is in all her Lowell George 'Willin' glory

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MI1UBiWsm14

don't look at the album cover as my thai niece who looks like Linda and whom I thought would follow my guidance and remain in school and use her combination of beauty and smarts to conquer the world...she ran off with a wastrel boyfriend and is now 3 months pregnant...

anger or despair :realangry::crying:....it all amounts to nought

I remember seeing Mick Jagger in an interview, saying , in the early 70's that Little Feat was his favorite band. Well, I'd never heard of'em but went out and got the record the next day. I was the coolest guy in the college dormitory for a while.

when I was a kid every other year we would drive back to Nashville from Pasadena to visit the grandfolks and on the way we would stop the night in Tucumcari as it was about an day's drive east from point of origin on highway 66 ('route 66', I believe now it's called Interstate 10)...

so, even if Lowell George never been there, I have...:)

we had some folks in Mississippi and the only highway there was 61 bein' rural and all...we never did travel to see them...there was a cross roads there abouts an' someone said that de devil lived nearby...

Love the old blues. Nice selection, Tutsi.

BTW, just so ya know yer not talkin' to yerself (sometimes I fancy I am) I enjoy readin' yer anecdotes.

Nice to see some of these tunes appreciated, so a bit more of of the great Little Feat. A live performance of "Dixie Chicken" from 1977 with . . . Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris and Jesse Winchester!! Enjoy!!

And "Oh, Atlanta" from a live gig in Manchester circa 1976.
