Timeless Tunes

From the Texas bad boys, ZZ Top, "Waitin' for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago" off their 1973 "Tres Hombres" LP. Rock on . . .

Hard to pick another . . . there's too much great material to choose from . . . but I'll go with "Tush" from their 4th LP, "Fandango," released in '75.

From the Four Tops to the Box Tops . . . their '67 hit "The Letter."

Subtitled for the deaf and hard of hearing . . . The Left Banke's 1966 classic, "Walk Away Renée." An interesting tidbit about the real Renée (from Wikipedia):

The song is one of a number Brown wrote about Renee Fladen-Kamm, then-girlfriend of The Left Banke's bassist Tom Finn and object of Brown's affection. She was associated with the band for a few weeks, and described as a free-spirited and quite tall blonde. The song was written one month after Brown met her.[8] "Walk Away Renée" was one of a series of love songs the infatuated Brown wrote after meeting his newfound muse.[9] Other songs written about her include the band's second hit "Pretty Ballerina" and "She May Call You Up Tonight". After decades of obscurity, she was identified in 2001 as a noted singer, vocal teacher and artist on the West Coast.

And perhaps Guthrie's most well-known tune, "Alice's Restaurant," released in '67. An instant classic which ultimately led to the same-titled 1969 movie. It's a lengthy story-tune, so it's presented in 2 parts. This is the "illustrated" version, so enjoy.

Some classic tunes from ex-Traffic member, Dave Mason. This one is "Shouldn't Have Took More Than You Gave," off his debut 1970 LP, "Alone Together."

And another from the same LP, "Look At You Look At Me." Still gives me goosebumps listening to this tune. May all the world forget this number it will remain with me. Listen to this cranked as loud as you possibly can. Heavenly guitar work.

Interesting to note the musicians contributing on this song:

The cast of players includes: Rita Coolidge, Claudia Lennear, and Delaney & Bonnie on vocals. Jim Capaldi (Traffic) on drums, Leon Russel keyboards. Mason on guitar obviously, joined by (among others) Chris Ethridge (ISB & Flying Burrito Brothers).

Speaking of the immortal Traffic, with a line-up of Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, Chris Wood and Dave Mason, here's "John Barleycorn Must Die," off the same-titled 1970 LP, their 5th. An all-around classic album.

And "Every Mother's Son" off the same LP.

don't look at the album cover as my thai niece who looks like Linda and whom I thought would follow my guidance and remain in school and use her combination of beauty and smarts to conquer the world...she ran off with a wastrel boyfriend and is now 3 months pregnant...

anger or despair :realangry::crying:....it all amounts to nought

Your niece would be a pretty girl indeed, Tutsi. Here's my favourite Linda album cover. Evocative, no?

And speaking of Steve Winwood, here he is at his tender 14~16 y.o. beginnings with The Spencer Davis Group. "Gimme Some Lovin'" was one of the tunes penned by Stevie in '66 whilst with that band.

And also written by Stevie in '67, "I'm A Man." Funny that he was still a kid. Well, I guess at 18 you can call yourself a man?

aarrgghh!...now what have ye done??!!...a high school chum from California made and sold that ivory half moon necklace on the album cover to Linda...a very reserved guy but, because I was of an inner circle of friends I saw some of his work: intricate carvings and drawings...he was a remarkable guy...lost all of his stuff in the Fort Ross forest fire in California in the early 80s...

all the more poignant as he adored my then high school girlfriend but was too shy to approach her...he just watched as I barged in outta nowhere and grabbed her with my grubby arms and etc...I said to my girl: 'why does Chris look at me like that?' she then told me the story and said 'he can't believe his eyes for you to show up and, etc..'

me and Chris always got along and when high school graduation came around to my query: 'what next, Chris?' he said: 'there aint gonna be no stupid college...I know what I wanna do...'

jeweler to the stars...

btw he played the lead in the high school production of David and Lisa...a remarkable performance...

I believe I posted before about the intro being one of the most compelling in popular music: bass then drums then a howling hammond organ...shoulda been a background for war and naplam and destruction...

steve winwood went on to do the monumental:

(shit, can't find the original on you tube...)

tutsi is drunk an' tryin' to get home to his flat in the Providencia area of Santiago in Chile...high class area, the military hospital where Pinochet stayed around the corner...then there was another drunk passed out in the gutter...big smile and eyes wide open...I prodded him an' said 'levantense borracho disgrasciado' he didn't respond so I hefted him over to a bench so that someone wouldn't run over him...

he was tryin' to get home soon but couldn't find his way...

Sorry, I didn't have time to read the 21 pages of this thread (congratulation to the OP, that's a very popular thread !), but it seems people post mostly their favorite songs without realizing some young people don't even know who the Beatles are..

For me, I would like to nominate Simon and Garfunkel. My gf said she didn't know them. I replied you don't know their name but you hear their songs all the time. Every time there is a band or a piano in a hall, you're 100% sure that at some time, he's going to play a song from Simon and Garfunkel.

First post in this thread? Bring it on, Jurgen. I commend you on your Simon and Garfunkel selection. Titans they are for their copious musical contributions that make this world a better place.

Growing up, from my late teens until mid-twenties, I was fortunate to be with people who rarely watched TV. Conversation and music . . . that's what we had. Hard to express the infinite joy and happiness I received from listening to music most all day, every day, for so many years. To this day I still rarely watch TV. Tunes . . . infinitely more enjoyable for me. Sorry to get a little deep about it but anyways, let's hear some more.
