Going to visit ... are there any expat bars?

You probably didn't get any answers because more the likely there are not any. But Thai bars can be fun even if you don't speak Thai they will try to welcome you. A good ice breaker I would think in an area like that would be to buy a fwe pictures of beers and pass them around, thye will try to thank you nad talk to you. might br a great time. In an area like that they are going to be a little bit nervou by your presents.

About a 45 Min drive to Udon plenty of farrang bars, but the road can be treacherous so if plan on drinking find a place to spend the night in Udon.

Talked to a friend who travels a lot in rural Thailand, his suggestion was to find the bus depot and check out the places around it and you should be able to shake up a bit fun.
