Hi there,

Wanting to buy a Sony DSC-TX5 camera. I am guessing the cheapest place to buy it would be in MBK.

Sony website in Thailand has it listed for 12 990 baht. Hopefully can find it a bit cheaper from somewhere inside MBK.

I'm just wondering though - would the camera be 100% 'true' ie. the exact same as buying from a Sony shop?

appreciate help

thanks

I looked at this camera a few weeks ago, same price on Samui. I did not buy it, as I did not trust the locking for the battery compartment, being too easy to accidentally open, when under water... (assuming you want it for that purpose)

That happened with a similar Olympus supposedly waterproof model, I had a couple of years ago....compartment opened by accidentally holding the camera in wrong spot & got wet inside ... Warranty void  it would be the same with Sony or others too.

I think you'll find that, Sony Authorized dealers have the same price, nation wide. Make sure if you buy they fill out the warranty card... although with the last Sony I had here, they dragged on repairs, while under warranty for 3 months, just so the warranty would run out, then it went south again.... & wanted 5000 baht to fix a 7000 baht camera... :bah: I don't think so!

If you want a camera for underwater, you might be better looking at one with separate casing... You may want to look at Canon, someone told me the other day, they are good. From my experience in using Canon repair, (have SLR too) they are better, with about two week turn around, including shipping to BKK.

It would be interesting to know how you make out.

Not sure about Sony but you can certainly get good prices for Olympus cameras at MBK. New and boxed, they may open the new package in front of you, but watch out for them slipping the international warranty card out. They can probably sell these on, hence the discount prices. However if you are staying in Thailand and believe the shop's verbal guarantee, you can get a very good discount.

I bought mine at powerbuy. The TX-1 was 11,990 and the TX-5 was 14,990. But when I paid the cashier only said the price was 12,990 so I was really happy. I also got loads and loads of free stuff from them. Free clear plastic lcd cover, USB, and even a camera stand not including the free carrying case and MS card.

I tend not to buy from MBK anymore. There are many problems buying from them. For example you might be able to buy from a MBK shop for 1,000 baht cheaper but maybe you won't get any goodies, won't be able to use your credit cards or 0% interest, tax invoice, etc.

It is actually for my bro who is wanting to buy this for his girlfriend (I am returning to Scotland in September). I think he probably has not seen the TX5 in real, so I will definately run this past him, mate. He said that the underwater thing was a big plus, although I think in Scotland it might not come in handy that often. Thanks for the advice :) Appreciate it

Olympus cameras. Any experience with these? To be honest, I don't know much about cameras. Do you know of a model that is similar to the TX5? Also, if so, how much cheaper do you think I could get this in MBK compared to direct from them (or a warranted seller)? Thanks for the help!

the 12 990 baht is the price direct from Sony, so I guess this fits in with what samuijimmy stated that the price will be the same for this camera wherever. The freebies might be of use though! I'll tell my bro so thanks very much :)
