This is maybe a moronic question but how does the 3BB service that doesn't need a telephone line work.

I have a 3BB connection at home through the telephone line which works fine and they are pretty good at dealing with it when there are problems.

However last week had a 3BB connection installed in a condo (doesn't use telephone line).

They brought the router and said the connection would be set up the next day. I received a text message saying connection now OK to use but the dam_n thing doesn't connect. It has now been 5 days and all I get from 3BB is " the engineer will be in contact" and no one ever contacts. Not even an offer to talk through the set up process to see if its all in order, although I've done it many times before so can't see where I could have stuffed up there.

Has anyone else had the same problem.

Where exactly is their signal coming from if its not the telephone line?

PS they start billing from the day of their supposed set up, so I have paid for 5 days of non use so far!

Can your computer communicate with the router ? It seems from your post that you have done setup, so I think your computer can communicate with he modem.

I would suggest checking the username and password, then check to make sure any firewall protection on your computer will allow the network to connect to the internet.

Well router communication no problem, although I haven't logged in to the address 192....

The LAN light comes on as well as the WLan light and ADSL light constantly flickers.

The Wifi shows 3BB connection on the network list and actually shows it as connected

However going to the 3BB connection in the Network list (control panel), shows 3BB as having no internet access.

Now the next moronic question (which drew a negative from the 3BB person that brought the router and another person) is why on earth do I have a telephone connection line and LAN line adapter if I don't need to plug it into the telephone line.

This is a 3BB connection that specifically says no telephone line needed (and their employee said no need to plug into telephone line); so do I still plug into telephone jack even though no line connected.

I'm confused!!

u still do need to plug the tele line from the jack to the router.

if the PPP , ADSL , Lan Port light is On. Means the connection is there. U just need to configure to use

Thank you guys!!

Gotta just love them - 3BB.

They categorically denied I needed it twice. Even when I said - why did you supply the dam_n line then!

Did the condo already have a phone line with number assigned installed by 3BB or another company? If so, for 3BB to give you internet they would have had to put the ADSL signal on that line which means they would have had to coordinate with/be a internet concessionaire with the phone company providing the line, OR, 3BB would have had to run a second line to your condo which has the ADSL. And when they say no second line needed I think what they really mean is no telephone number is issued with the line (it's DSL only...can't use as a phone/fax also); therefore, you have no monthly telephone number/line maintenance charge of approx 107 Baht....you only have the monthly internet charge.

Assuming you have the standard 4 wire telephone wiring at your condo "and assuming 3BB ran a second line to your condo providing the DSL signal," then that means your original phone line signal is coming out on pins number 2 and 3 (center pins) of the standard phone output jack and the 3BB line on pin 1 and 4 (the outside pins). You would need an adapter when you can buy at many stores that plugs into the phone jack and splits the two lines out to separate jacks so you can plug devices into the proper lines. Or maybe the 3BB DSL signal line is somehow routed onto your primarily phone line (pins 2 & 3) at the point they hooked into your condo. Either way, that telephone line and LAN line adapter may be the adapter you need to plug into the jack, and then plug your modem/router and land phone into the output jacks. Otherwise you may need the other adapter I just mentioned. First, try the adapter they gave you.

And of course, be sure you have entered you 3BB issued User ID and Password into the modem/router...until you do that, several of the modem lights will still blink at you and your computer would still see the modem but you would not make an IP/internet connection with 3BB.

Hey!

In my experience, if the connection shows in the list and it says No Internet Access or Local Only, then there is a problem wih the network being able to access the internet.... that is usually caused by a firewall program.

If the connecton shows, and you do not have a telephone line connected to your telephone wall jack, it is probably connected to a WiFi transmitter for the whole area (building).

Anyway, I would double click the connection in Network and Connections and see if something comes up to check the connection. It may show that a firewall is preventing internet access. Very common for WiFi to prevent people connecting to your computers Wireless radio and hijacking your computer.

Where are you located? (in general)

Suggest you contact the juristic office and get your building tech to check out the phone line. 3BB does not use any DIRECT phone line (one with a specific telephone number assigned), but still need the intercom phone line of the building to deliver their signals.

Thank you!

Just plugging in the phone line and connecting to router worked.

Now have internet access.

So maybe their little advertising spiel about no telephone line required is probably not quite accurate (should be no active/registered telephone line)!

Well, technically you don't have a phone line from 3BB; you have an ADSL line from 3BB instead. You phone line is from whatever company is providing that voice service. It is confusing as to how 3BB advertises this program....what they really mean to say is no "phone number" is assigned which means no monthly phone line/number fee of around 107 Baht; only the internet package charge. It's probably clear as a bell in Thai, but in the translation to/communication in English the real meaning goes astray....Happens a million times everyday in Thialand in spoken and written communications between Thai's and farangs.

The lack of a direct phone line but still able to have ADSL internet service is the selling point of 3BB. They targeted the older condo/apartment buildings which were constructed with an internal PABX phone service that is connected with only a few direct outside lines.

New condo buildings in Bangkok are now constructed with 1-2 direct lines per unit (either from TOT or True), and have no PABX lines. 3BB cannot offer their services in such buildings, and the occupants are limited to the internet service of the specific phone company providing the direct lines.
