I have cleaned the contacts on the camera and lens as recommended for this error, but no improvement.

The camera works perfectly with other lenses,

so I guess the problem is in the lens.

Any thoughts before I send the lens EFs 17-85 off to the Canon centre?

Thanks

I had the same problem. Took it to Canon who diagnosed a sticking diaphragm in the lens. Replacement cost 7k on a 24-105mm and took a couple of weeks.
